EUR/USD looks to test 1.25 level in short-term by Ryan Teeples

The EUR/USD has been in a steep downtrend (chart below) since reaching a near-term high around 1.47. Since that time the pair has tumbled, hitting as low as 1.27, and has remained in a trading range that forms a very tight downward channel. http://www.learningmarkets.com/image...2008gbpaud.png

The [GBP/USD] which plunged on Mon recovered most of its losses yest as it rose from an earlier low of 1.4153 to an o/n high of 1.4485 as the BOE start its 2-day mtg today with the decision tmw. Mkt players believe they will reduce int rates by 50bps to 1.0% & they are also paying close attention to any indication whether the cb is closer to instituting quantitative easing. Data in the U.K. saw the CIPS constr PMI index rose to 34.5 from 29.3 in Dec. UK Chancellor Darling commented "We've seen extraordinary volatility in mkts generally & in the ccy mkts in the last few mths which will warrant a good discussion at the G7 mtg because everyone is concerned about this." The Nationwide consumer conf index hit a record low in Jan dragging the pair down a tad from its opening lvl of 1.4470 to current lvl of 1.4360. Buying orders at 1.4330 by a European name will provide support & selling orders at 1.4440 by a US name will cap the upside this session.

The [DLR/YEN] moves back and forth around the pivotal 89.40-50 after easing from the earlier high of 89.62 on Us name's and Eur/Yen and Stg/Yen sales. [AUSTRALIA] The Government plans to sell a record A$22 bln to A$24 bln of bonds through to June 30 to fund its economic stimulus plans that will drag the country into its first budget deficit in seven years. The sales will start Feb 6th with an offering of A$600 mln of debt maturing April 2015; with subsequent auctions to be held on Wednesdays and Fridays for an issue amount normally between A$500 mln and A$700 mln. Whilst Aussie bond futures have come under some selling pressure on the increased supply; the papers are expected to be fully absorbed by the market, especially with the amount minimal compared to sovereign debt sales in the US.

[NZ] Commodity export prices continued to slide into Jan, with ANZs benchmark commodity price index tumbling by a further 4.3% on the month to be down a hefty 26.5% vs a year ago. It was the sixth straight monthly decline and followed a 7.4% fall in both Dec and Nov. In NZD terms, the impact from the global commodity collapse was also being felt despite the weaker currency, with the index falling 4.3% on the mth to be up down 2.6% on the year. NZ's key dairy driven commodity sector has not been immune to the global developments. Even the currency's weakness is not able to act as a buffer, and set to place further downside risks on the economy already in the midst of a recession.

The [STG/YEN] held well above 126.65 yesterday (126.85/78/69/65/83 lows in about 15 hours) in tandem with the head line pair Stg/Dlr's firmness around 1.4150-60, and went higher in NY time to extend its gains to 129.48 earlier in our time. The CHF was able to put in a creditable performance against the Greenback despite the Swiss Dec trade surplus coming in much worse than expected Chf0.22 bln vs a revised surplus of Chf2.25 bln in November. The correlation between a stronger Dow and weaker USD returned as the Greenback fell against most of the majors with the exception of the JPY after stocks rose on the back of a stronger than expected Dec pending home sales data. That sent the [USD/CHF] tumbling from an earlier high of 1.1669 to an o/n low of 1.1401, the first time in a week the CHF was able to get the better of the USD. With no Swiss data due today, the pair will take its cue from US data and the stock market for direction. Buying orders at 1.1400 by a Swiss name will protect the downside and selling orders at 1.1480 by a UK Clearer will dictate the range this session.
