The much vaunted run on stops above 90.30 in [USD/YEN] came to little in the end, and basically just gave Japanese players better levels to sell. The high 90.79 in NA, so not denting a band of Far East offers 90.80-00 which still represent the first significant hurdle for a still bullish market. Again investment demand shored things up ahead of 89.50 whilst bad news for Japan's outlook just keeps rolling in (severe recession to last 14mths - Govt panel). Talk of repatriation/redemptions could gain in popularity over month end and so favour Yen for the very short term, but there seems little expectation for major breakout at this point in time. DJI Futs edging deeper into the red (-70) could direct more interest on Eur/Yen & session lows of 117.32 (now 117.75). Expiries 89.25 and 90.00. Trade now 90.10.


[OIL] Comments continue to debouch from Davos but so far having little impact on prices. NYMEX is trading in the red for the session at Usd 41.64, but in a narrow range since the NY pit closed. OPEC Sec Gen El Badri has said that OPEC will not hesitate to cut output if pressure remains on prices, although giving no view about expected price direction. In addition, the Sec Gen noting that OPEC spare capacity stands around 7-8 mn bpd - at the height of the oil spike this shrank to around 1/5-2 mn bpd. At the same time, Azerbaijian has also said that they will "try" to contribute to oil cuts. But while not having much impact on front mth NYMEX, the Mar-Jul contango has steepened up to almost Usd 10 with mkt concerns that the demand/supply bal could tighten substantially in Q3.

Today's [GERMAN UNEMPLOYMENT] for January came in higher than expected with a seasonally adjusted increase of an extra 56k people out of work against market forecasts of 30k. This leaves the adjusted jobless rate at 7.8%, against a survey of 7.7% and a prior reading of 7.6%.

[ICELAND]'s CB has left key rates unchanged at 18%, which is no surprise given the political upheaval and financial turmoil the nation is currently witnessing. Rates have been at 18% since October when they were hiked 6% amid a market collapse. Meanwhile, the focus is now on when a likely change in CB leadership will occur. [EUROZONE M3] slowed further in Dec, with the y/y rate of money supply growth down to 7.3% from a revised 7.7% in Nov (prev 7.8%), below the 7.6% expected. This has taken the 3mth ma rate down to 7.9%, from 8.3% (consensus 8.0%). A breakdown shows that private sector loans slowed sharply to just 5.8% in Dec from 7.1%, the slowest rate of increase since mid 2004. Although the overall rate of money supply growth remains above the ECB's 4.5% reference level the latest deceleration provides further evidence of the general retreat in infl pressures, and leaves the CB on track to cut rates again in Mar.

What! Eur has gone from 1.3164 Open to the current bid of1.3064, as of 1:17am. I've made many, many pips within this 100 pip area. Stay tuned if you are having trouble.

[EUR/USD BACK IN WEEK'S MID-RANGE] Not a huge difference in Europe so far, but Eur/Usd still looks overall offered having peaked at 1.3335 late session Weds. Volatile range trading appears to be the main theme, but EU recession watch looks like it should be a constant weight so far

[EU ASSET MARKETS] Bonds and stocks still largely decoupled and both on the backfoot. However, Mar Bunds and Gilts have rebounded well from their 122.24 and 117.35 lows to hit peaks recently at 122.84 and 117.81 (ie 'only' 22 and 9 ticks adrift vs 82 and 55 ticks down at one stage) amidst reports of decent Japanese/Asian real money buying of the key Eurozone 10 yr benchmark and its US equivalent. Weaker than f/c German jobs/Eurozone M3 data may also have underpinned the EU debt market recovery, but supply still a issue to deal with, as Italy, the UK and US all have auctions today (Eur2.5-3.25 bn 2011/2019 BTPs, Eur0.5-1 bn 2015 CCTs, Gbp2.75 bn 2020 Gilts and $30 bn 5 year T-notes). Meanwhile, the Dax, FTSE and Cac-40 have retreated a bit further from yest's elevated highs to stand -48 to -68 pts) on some caution ahead of the US Senate vote on Obama's stimulus (expected a tougher hurdle than the House).
