My thinking regarding dow dropping and usd going up is simply this: stocks' value is represented in usd, if usd heads south, then stocks should go up (of course given that there is no trend present in the stocks themselves, much like the current consolidation). Same goes for gold as it is valued in usd. Just a simple explaination, dont want to further confuse myself.
OK I'll go with the stock price and dollars. I may be a dope but the commodities market is the real judge of the health of the dollar and for gold. Why the hell would I sell gold----- because I can make a fortune in corn?

The US Economy is going to get steam rolled in 2009. They are at the end of the beginning of their hardships. In 2009 you will see many business fall into bankrupcy due to lack of funding from financial institutions.

There will also be a global food shortage in 2009 as bank lending to the agricultural industry has been severed..... The list goes on and on.

USA 2009 --------> 1929. The only way that recession was stopped was because of World War 2.

My sentiment is that people will begin to see that countries around the world are doing away with the USD, and the USD will weaken: or should I say, continue to weaken. Just look at the USD index: in 2002 it was 119, today that value is 82. That is a 31% drop in 6 years. That is a clear indication that people, countries, industries are pulling away from the USD slowly. This will continue to decline.

What does this mean for the currency market? At the moment, people are buying the dollar based on risk aversion, because that's all they've known to do: buy the dollar when times get sticky: but when people start to realise that the USD really has hit the wall at 120mph, and when people realise that there really isn't any foundation to the USD anymore, then it is fair to say there will be a sell off of the dollar. When will this happen? It could be anytime, 2009, 2010.... but it will happen (in my humble opinion).

You also have to consider who was running the country during that time. The charts show that when Bush 1 was in control we had a weak dollar. Then when Clinton took control, the dollar rebounded with a vengeance. Then Bush 2 came into play and BAMM, the dollar value tanked again. Now we'll see where it goes with this new leadership, and direction. Interesting theory. So the economy did well because Clinton was popular?

So who runs the country is more important than how it is ran?

Then why not have an "American Idol" like contest where someone could win the U.S. presidency? It would solve all of the economy related problems.

edit: btw.. check the 1998 housing prices... the clinton bill started the whole deal.. honestly not that it was his fault...... but that is when it happened..
