If the bailout is positive for the US economy and positive for equities then it should benefit the dollar.
Many are viewing the weakness in the US as a sign that the contagion will spread to Europe (Already has and will continue) and Asia.
I believe that King Paulson and company had a quick perusal of some financial history and came to the conclusion that those in Sweden and Japan did. Governmental action was necessary to avert a global financial meltdown.
Many will view the bailout as a move towards socialism but we've had a few bailouts in our past (S&L, Mexican...etc) and we remain quite married to capitalism. The pendulum swings back and fourth.
The easy fix to this debacle. A burgeoning US economy. How we get there. Now there's a debate. I find it comical that we are blaming individuals currently in power for this meltdown. Bush, Paulson, Bernake... the list goes on. When you do that it shows your limited undstanding of financial markets. This didn't happen overnite and it won't be fixed overnite either. If you want to look at the genisis of this debacle it might be good to peek back at Greenspan's rate cutting parade.
The lower the interest rate... the easier it is to afford a home you can't afford. The government should raise it's hand and say... I'm a big part of this failure and now I need to be a part of the solution. The government wanted lots of Americans to be able to afford the American dream. Instead of saying... hey... reality check... buy a home you can afford or buy a trailer. Nope... we are too politically correct for reality therapy... we give you sub-prime. (Sounds like a transformer) We create loan packages that require no money down, we create interest only mortgages and we loan money out we know has very little chance of being repaid.
So... the bottom line. Save me the doom and gloom. Keep the uneducated conspiracy theories to yourself. The dollar may consolidate and head south for a little while but it will continue north long term.
Acumen I love reading your comments on this forum and you are a great guy. But we don't agree on this. I see absolutely no reason why the dollar should strengthen in the short, mid or long term.
For example: the United States created a national debt of 5 trillion dollars in about a few hunderd years. Now 2 weeks they dubbeld the national debt with another 5 trillion more with the freddie/fannie bail out. And now the weird thing: that day the dollar actually strengthen against all major currencies. Conclusion: you can't trust fundamentals, its all about the way people look at charts.
