Good Luck, Mr Gorsky

When Apollo Mission Astronaut Neil Armstrong first walked on the moon, he not only gave his famous "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind" statement but followed it by several remarks, usually common traffic between him, & the other astronauts and Mission Control.
Just before he re-entered the lander, however, he made the enigmatic remark, "Good luck Mr.Gorsky."
Many people at NASA thought it was a casual remark concerning some rival Soviet Cosmonaut. However, upon checking, there was no Gorsky in either the Russian or American space programs.
Over the years many people questioned Armstrong as to what the "Good luck Mr. Gorsky" statement meant, but Armstrong always just smiled.
Just a few years ago, (On July 5, 1995, in Tampa Bay, FL) while answering questions following a speech, a reporter brought up the 26 year old question to Armstrong. This time he finally responded.
Mr.Gorsky had finally passed away and so Neil Armstrong felt he could answer the question.
When he was a kid, he was playing baseball with a friend in the backyard. His friend hit a fly ball, which landed in the
front of his neighbor's bedroom windows. His neighbors were Mr. & Mrs. Gorsky.
As he leaned down to pick up the ball, young Armstrong heard Mrs.Gorsky shouting at Mr. Gorsky: "Oral sex! You want oral sex?! You'll get oral sex when the kid next door walks on the moon!"

Commentary: German bank spells out how it was baffled by CDO investment

LONDON (MarketWatch) -- It always makes for fun reading when a financial institution proclaims how dumb it is.

That's not quite how Germany's HSH Nordbank puts it, of course. In the court filing against Switzerland's UBS (UBS

<IMG class=pixelTracking height=1 width=1 border=0>UBS) -- filed on Monday, naturally, in New York City -- HSH says that when it plunked down $500 million in cash for a collateralized debt obligation, it was a "regional German bank with little familiarity with international structured financing."

Which begs the obvious question: why buy such a vehicle?

Well, because "UBS specifically represented to HSH that HSH's interest would be in very high credit quality paper issued by the CDO, as reflected in its predominately AAA rating," the lender explains.

All of which sounds like a good argument to buy U.S. Treasury notes. In fact, HSH wasn't even getting much yield in return -- most of the notes paid LIBOR plus 0.8 of a percentage point. But back to the filing.

HSH says it was told by UBS that the CDO, called "North Street 4," was backed by a reference pool of "stable, investment grade collateral" and said -- "specifically," HSH writes almost in a pained tone -- that the assets had "no foreseeable credit problems."

Well, in 2001, there weren't many out there predicting the subprime downturn -- except perhaps Goldman Sachs' mortgage bond-trading desk.

HSH says UBS treated the CDO as an opportunity to defraud it, making up to $120 million in a single day by setting up a "compromised structure."

The buyer evidently trusted UBS to no end, not only letting UBS act both as investment adviser and creator of the vehicle but letting the Swiss bank move assets into and out of the vehicle at will through a related credit default swap.

The German bank also said it devoted "several months of due diligence" in evaluating the UBS proposals. But UBS seemingly left HSH so dazzled that in 2002 it succumbed to the Swiss bank's entreaties -- without, evidently, hiring a separate adviser to take a look at the CDO it was buying.

Now, HSH says it wants at least $275 million plus punitive damages from UBS.
Without going into whether UBS omitted facts relevant to the vehicle, what's clear that the German bank didn't take even the most basic of precautions.
How a bank that wanted "extremely conservative, secure and stable investments" ended up buying a CDO, using a broker that was acting as both counter-party and adviser, after months of deliberating, is worth a probe of its own.

You're right. 20 years ago is not reference to me. Inflation here was some 5,000% a year and you could buy bread for like Cr$ 5,000. Cars happened to cost BILLIONS by that time
