ECB's Mersch Urges Caution as Growth Risks Increase

Jan. 16 (Bloomberg) -- European Central Bank council member Yves Mersch said the bank should exercise caution as risks to economic growth increase.

``We have certainly downside risks to economic activity,'' Mersch, 58, said in an interview at his office in Luxembourg yesterday. While inflation risks have also risen, ``we're not unaware of mitigation to price developments,'' he said, citing a stronger euro, near-record oil prices, the slowing U.S. economy and higher credit costs.

The ECB has threatened to raise interest rates as unions demand wage increases to compensate for the fastest inflation in six years. At the same time, the U.S. Federal Reserve is cutting borrowing costs to stave off recession in the world's largest economy after its housing market slumped.

``I don't like assumptions that what's happening in one part of the world is also true for another part,'' Mersch said. The ECB should nevertheless ``be cautious, look at the figures and take the appropriate decisions. There's still widespread uncertainty, and that's affecting confidence.''

It may be possible. hahaha i laugh at how many times people look the charts without knowing whats going on.

ECB MEMBERS IN A PRESS CONFERENCE HAS BASICALLY AGREED THEY CANT RAISE RATES AS RISKS TO ECONOMY HAS CONSIDERABLE INCREASED IN THE LAST DAYS.

i know is too tempting to buy euros rigth now, but please dont do it. it still has much room to fall, not much risk priced in euro and the risk in the eurozone is increasing really fast as the economies contract at record pace.
this even could cause euro to plummet around 1.40.

wanna know what to do? wait for ultrashawkish Trichet to talk. hahaha that can be fun. lets see.

depends on the timeframe you're looking at. the "uncertainty-swings" we see right now aside, things aren't looking so stellar for the buck so I am still confident that eventually, 1.50 is gonna happen - . looks like most poeple in theis thread are more interested in intraday analysis, so in that context, 1.50 looks like it ain't happening for a while, because we just had been close enough to it a few days ago. beige book is coming in 15 mins, that should give us more clues.

huh. beige book sounding much better than I would have guessed. maybe not a .5% cut after all. If Feds do only a quarter and january remains warm, that 1.50 might become somewhat elusive.

and ditto on eurozone economy, although "contracting at full speed"? - what makes you say that, acidguy? if we'd be talking britain, yea OK, I see that, but so far Germany looks maybe weak but still alright...

with inflation/economy dilemma as you mentioned, I wonder if inflation isnt a bit more on the forefront than economy?

just remember how the usa economy started going to - number reports.
was slowly going.

otherwise in the eurozone, everything looked good but suddenly reports started coming.
"-" "-" "-" and deeper..... so thats concerning.
an now many ecb governors start saying there is huge risk in euro growth and inflation must not be the main concern. also today Trichet talk has been dovish as he says risks to growth are increasing dramatically?

so cant i say? contracting at full speed?

euro looks weak. more weak than the usd. lol.
right now even forming a hidden bearish divergence.
losing confidence on euro in the short term

champion right now i think is gbp and chf, great reports from there.
but chf is expected to fall hard as economic sentiment weakens.

are all the currencies in the wolrd losin their purchasing power?
and commodities the new wealth vehicle?

Well they could be losing their purchasing power, but the question in forex is which one is losing it's purchasing power RELATIVE to the other.
