EVERYTHING and I mean EVERYTHING I talk about, I have published material proving its viability in my possession - I just haven't revealed the source, nor do I intend to, I LEARNT everything I know and more Importantly (which is exactly where you've gone wrong) is I actually took the trouble of manually back testing to prove to myself

I could solve your failure overnight - but you know best, too knowledgeable, but in reality and we all can see it, you know nothing, try and give you some free help and you dismiss it

What may become embarrassing is how we are complimenting each other repeatedly in particular as it isn't very specific, and if it is, then only related to what we choose to share. I would be more than happy to continue our dialogue, but then not on this thread.

And, yes, I've published several academic papers. But they are all in the area of the mathematics of non-relativistic quantum theory, and I guarantee you that the only thing you would understand would be my name, and I'd rather keep my privacy.

But it seems that one thing we share is our thoughtful approach, of thinking, re-thinking, and thinking again, constantly re-evaluating and learning. Seems essential to me.

I'm inclined to agree. The strategy that you and I, from different perspectives, have suggested would safely meet the requirements if committed to.

For my version not even manual backtesting is needed. The trading platform ProRealTime offers a 14 day free trial, its scripting language is learnt in an afternoon, and allows automated backtesting of strategies, as well as implementation of automated execution of the algorithm if connected to a brokerage account.

But the thread starter seems more inclined to nurse an ORB strategy of poor performance and without promise.

If one looks at the backtesting data shared, the only reason the strategy is somewhat profitable is the historically anomalously high XAUUSD volatility. Why wasn't that observation made and capitalised on?

It becomes even more puzzling when one considers that, as opposed to equities, there is no cash open in XAUUSD, so it doesn't even fall under the category of ORB strategy. And the current XAUUSD correlation with the equities open is a recent thing, likely due to portfolio rebalancing by large investors. Wasn't there in the summer, and is likely to recede again.

At the same time, we all have our strange motivations for what we do, and they are largely beyond our control if we dare to be honest.

So I would like to extend my best wishes to the thread starter in the hope that he finally will achieve his desired livelihood from trading even though it doesn't look promising from what one can read on this thread so far.

You said that there are many strategies that work and mentioned, for example, "The DIBS Method" which can also be found here in the forum. I can say that I have already tried out many (if not most) of the strategies and systems published here in the forum, including the DIBS method (at least the original one presented by PeteCrows, which deals with H1 inside bar breakouts during the first trading hours of a session).

I took a closer look at this method 2-3 years ago as it is one of the few strategies here that can really be backtested objectively, has clear rules and requires no discretion apart from possibly where to take profits. This is also very similar to the ORB strategy style that I am very familiar with and comfortable with.

In any case, after a few backtests, where I tested the strategy on different batches of 3-month intervals for the years 2020, 2021, and 2023 on the GBP/USD and EUR/USD currency pairs, I came to the conclusion that I would not be able to achieve my required goals of a constant minimum profit on a monthly or at least quarterly basis. I tried the recommended way to apply the method, enter at 2 lots, where half the position would be closed at a 1:1 return and the other half would be left running. I tested automatic trailing stops as well as a fixed profit target of twice the initial risk for the running position.

Not only my backtests but also 1 month of live forward trading showed no success with it. So is it really a profitable method?

My conclusion: "Maybe" it's a profitable method in the long term (after several years). I didn't even try backtesting it for several years, as it's usually enough for me to see that the strategy wouldn't be profitable enough to achieve my goals over the timeframes I needed. However, long-term profitability would be of little help to me in achieving my goal of a consistently repeatable minimum return in the time periods I need in order to be able to withdraw profits to be able to pay for my life.

I haven't tried to dismiss anything here. I've read through all of your posts several times and also looked at the charts, and so far I haven't been able to derive anything for myself as to how I could develop a trading approach that would be applicable to me and lead to my stated goals. It may be that I'm not Einstein and don't understand a lot of things (and don't even want to). I've never denied that. My IQ is rather average. My goal is to achieve a clear goal without having to know everything about the markets and trading. How can you even do that? I have a life outside of trading. You also said that it should be about finding an approach that works for YOU.

I noticed the same thing with Gold. Gold seems to be in the hype right now, so it's probably no wonder that it's currently performing better than the actual markets the system is intended to trade. The ORB system wasn't developed by me personally. It's a commercial system that I bought (for little money). I'd be happy to send you the link if you'd like to take a look. The system was originally developed exclusively for stock indices and extensively tested for robustness there. Of course, I also backtested it myself, and it showed profitable results overall for a statistically significant number of trades and time (although not outstanding). Profit factors ranging from between 1.1 - 1.6 for my backtests with an average risk/reward ratio between 1:1.5 to 1.8

I have no idea yet whether I can achieve my goals with it the way I'm currently using it. I started trading five stock indices simultaneously at the beginning of August. These were the DAX, FTSE, NAS, DOW, and the S&P 500. After a few discussions with the developer, he recommended that I might be trading too many positively correlated markets, which could unnecessarily increase the drawdown (which is also what my own experience after almost 2.5 months of use has shown). I was then recommended to apply it to fewer markets and possibly try out Gold, so I created a new account (the one for the TE linked here) which has only been trading DAX, NAS and Gold for the past few weeks. Another account that only trades DAX (also linked as TE in my profile as ORB-3). And the original that trades all 5 mentioned stock indices (also linked as TE in my profile as ORB-1).

All three accounts have been profitable so far, although admittedly not impressive. ORB-2, the account with DAX, NAS, and Gold, is currently the best in terms of risk-to-reward, achieving a +7% return over the last 28 days under a max. drawdown of currently -5.3% (which would be sufficient for me if it stayed that way - which I do not currently assume).

In any case, it's a system I can implement and at least doesn't require any manual charting time. I'm not saying it's a good idea or that it will lead to my goals in the long term, and as I said, I'm still interested in finding other things that might work for me and potentially lead to better results.

Again. I'm in midlife (No pension check yet) and have a ton of worries, especially financial, health, and family-related ones. I don't have the time to spend 24 hours a day focused on trading and all the information it contains, learning about everything there is, and trying it out. Even though I do spend every free minute trying to make some progress, because I really want to achieve my trading goals.

This week I will take a closer look at what you wrote with:

I deleted the post after learning that you were trading for 15 years without any success. I agree with Thtpro and medici. Both of them have given you enough to work with but you are stuck with ORB. So, I did not want to get in your way and leave it upto you to decide whether to pursue their methods or not. I just wanted to motivate you to trade no matter what method you are trading with. But again, after 15 years of trading, the problem is not the method anymore, it's a much more fundamental issue that no one can help you unless you do so yourself.

Regarding the DIBs method. I have never tried the strategy. I just know a few fellows who are using that strategy and earn consistently. They improved upon that system with their own few tweaks and it has been paying them off. If it has been paying their bills, then I am sure it would for you aswell. But, that requires experimentation and different ways to trade. However, I feel like you have been stuck in the same cycle for 15 years, hence no progress has been made. So from your perspective it would not be worth it.

I did try to make medici's strategy automatic and it shows promise. I tested it on a 5 year timeline (2020-2025) and it gave an impressive 60% return after 5 years. I tested it only on GBPUSD first, but all markets (atleast for the USD basket) give returns near this ballpark. Was it better then DIB's? I have not tried the DIB's method so I can't say. But from what I see people earning on DIB's, it's such a superior strategy.

Yeah with PRT you can get it for free with IG - you only need to trade 4 times per month to get it for free - I've not used it for a long time but I just used to get a 1 min chart up take a £0.01p trade, open it and immediately close it out 4 times and got PRT for free! Whether they've closed that little scam or not I don't know - even if the market moved 100 points in 2 seconds you only lose £1

If you have a concept to test, I forget his name, but there's a website prorealcode.com or something like that, sign up for free and email the owner, he'll build the method in script for you and you can obviously back test it

I forgot to mention - Plummer - found a lot of the content of his books from codes and angles in Gann's Tunnel thru the air - totally different, but identical to what Plummer did, is a guy called Alan Green, he discovered Shakespeare and the actual American declaration of Independence document is littered with secret hidden meanings, codes and maths - on Youtube

How does this relate to the markets? the markets work to the same maths that those documents hide, namely from the Pyramids

Yes, I can tell you what is fundamentally wrong. It's just that I haven't found any effective help yet that will lead me to my goals, and all my own attempts have failed so far. I've tried so many strategies that people told me might work that I can't even count them anymore. Either they were all rubbish, or they may have worked a long time ago, but no longer work or don't work well enough to meet my rather short-term goals of a consistently repeatable monthly/quarterly minimum profit with appropriate risk.

Perhaps my expectations are wrong and such a thing simply does not exist, which may well be the case, but then I don't know how people manage to live purely off their trading profits without having sufficient capital already set aside to bridge any longer periods of unprofitability.

Unfortunately, it seems that there is virtually no real help available in this regard, which I obviously need. There is hardly an evening course or university you can attend that will show you how to make a living from trading by teaching you the necessary steps in an understandable way. The internet is full of half-baked knowledge and self-proclaimed experts, which makes it incredibly difficult (at least for me) to find the right information.

But let's see, maybe when I have gray hair and don't really need to earn an income from trading anymore, I'am there

If I lose when I shouldn’t have, I put myself “on the bench” for as long as it takes to spread that loss over a reasonable period of time. And when I think I need discipline to resist, I tell myself that trying to “be disciplined” is what idiots do when they still haven’t understood how much this work could change their lives. The days when I follow to stay inactive almost magically become the most meaningful ones. And the reason could be that I am emotionally involved anyway because I put handcuffs on my wrists and resisting is an active decision that must be confirmed moment by moment and, as we all know about the way we understand something, it happens when we are completely in it with our head, soul, and heart! Does that make sense to you?

How does making an average euro100k per annum for the next 3 years starting in year 2027 to 2029 (3 years trading cycle) sound to you? You will need starting trading capital for this.

In the meantime you still need euro5k per month to sustain your living expenses.

I completely agree with what amvt's said.

@Noisy I can fully understand your situation because it's the same one I've been in for years, and we're also the same age and have the same family situation.
You're simply stuck in so many of the beliefs you've developed over the years that you can't even recognize the excellent advice you've been given in this thread.

Again, I don't blame you because I've been there too, but since I've been in your situation, all I can advise you is to stop and think about the posts made in this thread by medici, Thtpro, and amvt's, because each of them is a goldmine.

And remember: if you've been thinking this way for 15 years and nothing has come of it, now is the time to change your mindset.
We can't expect different results by always doing the same thing!

Thank you. Yes, that reminds me of a famous quote by Albert Einstein, who said, "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.'

I wouldn't say this applies entirely to me, as I've tried all sorts of different things and am generally open to new things. It's just pointless if it doesn't fit with what I'm capable of or even lead to the stated goals I have.

I want to add my experience in it:
I have been trading since 2.5 years , So that in all the mean time i learn to that , All the trading strategies work ,If you just master it .
And the most important or i would like to say for me the only thing which is different between profitable trader & unprofitable trader is the "MONEY MANAGEMENT"+"RISK MANAGMENT". Would like to debate on this topic fellas .let's learn together.

An algo bought for little money will never produce dependable income

And for that I'll tell you the story of my biggest ever trading success, in terms of percentage return, and how it come to an end. Due to my academic background option pricing (and mispricing) emerged as a strength of mine. Back in my academic days I developed a trading strategy for taking advantage of option mispricing, specifically daily fx options. Starting with a small account I made 500 times the money in four months. Unbelievable you may say, but I'll spare you the details why my hit-rate was way close to 100%.

As part of this adventure, after about a month and a half, I outgrew one broker in terms of available liquidity. So I opened up an account with the market maker in this particular type of option. And at about the time when I reached the 500 times the initial stake I was bidding for all available liquidity - meaning that it was me against the market maker, and I was winning.

That was the beginning of the end. Suddenly I discovered that, after I entered a position, that the market would move against me to the point of forcing me to take a loss. So what had happened was that the market maker had decided to get rid of me. And they had the power t wipe me out if they wanted to. So I took my money and left.

Now imagine that there is a profitable algo available at an affordable price that would allow people of lesser means and capabilities to earn a living. Soon enough lots of people would learn about it, and like me in my little option trading drama, soon enough those who move the markets around would notice this collective of amateur algo traders and how they are eating into the profits of professionals.

Then the same thing would happen as happened to me. The professionals would squeeze you out of the market. There's even a term for it. It's called "shaking the tree".

So forget about buying algos.

This is another reason for your lack of success - you are driven by fear and worry. Successful traders are not. This is explained in the best book on trading psychology that I know, The Hagakure by Tsumetomo Yamamoto, which says that "The truth is, if you base your thinking upon your selfish desires, the working of your mind is reduced to the working of a malicious intellect."

And it goes on to say that "It is usual for the fool not to be able to transcend thinking based on 'I'.

So, at least in my view, successful trading is about self-overcoming. Which is why I quoted the Sermon On The Mount earlier.

This was probably more of an issue between you and the market maker broker and it probably can't be generalized to all market maker brokers?

I have absolutely no fear of trading, nor am I driven by greed (which shows my monthly target of a minimum return of 2%). Most of the people I see here or elsewhere on the Internet want to double their accounts every day and then wonder why they're bankrupt again after two days. If I could ever find a disciplined and profitable approach for myself to potentially reach such goal, I would have no problem executing it without such emotions.

This, along with the time factor, is another reason why I would prefer automated trading (or at least automate as much as possible), as it would remove emotional impulse decisions from the equation right from the start. It also seems a bit contradictory to me. If successful traders aren't afraid, then they shouldn't be afraid of amateur traders who eat up their profits, trying to make a few bucks, especially not in the most liquid markets in the world.

I don't think these big players in the market (Major Banks, Central Banks, Corporations, Hedge Funds etc.) are afraid that their profits will be eaten up or even destroyed by amateur traders using purchased algos. They're already destroying themselves the fastest through something as simple as not having the discipline to execute their strategies in a constant manner (be it an algo or point-and-click trading).

Didn't get much done today. I'll start backtesting your suggested approach tomorrow, though. That is, trading with the Renko chart on GBP/USD M30 during the first few hours of the London FX session opening. Since we haven't identified any clear entry and exit rules yet, I'm hoping to find my own idea to test.

There are ethical and legal reasons for why universities don't teach these things. There are at times companies that try to teach people the things you are asking for. A bit more than a decade ago a company called the Day Trading Academy taught all relevant things that people need to know to successfully day trade, and they taught a profitable strategy.

A former trading partner of mine took their course, traded the strategy, made good money, and decided to set up shop and help people like yourself to make it by teaching what the DTA taught, only better, And he had quite a few happy students.

But the markets change. The DTA strategy is no longer profitable. So anybody who bet their livelihood on it has had to eat humble pie. The two education businesses mentioned no longer exist.

Bottom line: For long term success in trading you need to develop the skills to independently develop and trade your own strategies, and to modify your approach when markets change.

In relation to what people have tried to share with you here you should therefore, for your own development, find something that attracts you, take ownership of it, make it your own, and then develop and Polish it as your prized possession. That's the only way.

But a business like the Day Trading Academy can be excellent for getting you a head start. You just need to find a good one.
