Apropos of which, a buy here ( price > 200 SMA and a bounce off the lower band ) with a stop at the red line and a TP at the green (approximately) was profitable, but it only made me £15, I made more money trading the indices

yes there are strategies for example as I can see you are also using the S / R strategy. and yes it requires watching the news.

I closed profitable trades a couple of times in preparation for news events, the result was the profitable trend continued but I was out of the market.

You closed to fast, you can sit for a day, or more after the news.

Yes, when you are older trader, prepared and know how the market works. I haven't traded your system, but all systems have their flows. You have to discover what are these flows and do what is apropriate.
