Hi Whale,
A very good question. It has actually made me revisit my position size. When I started posting on FF a few years ago, it was a pet project for me. I have a revelation to make. My main stream income is from scalping, which I don't share here. Psssst, don't tell anyone. Anyway, the reason for this was to explore longer term trading. I am getting older and I am not sure that I will handle the rigors and stresses from scalping as the years go by. I have always been proficient in short term trading besides scalping, but going longer term was new territory for me. Last year I closed positions that ran for a year and six months. This was a major achievement for me as I started understanding what it takes to run long term trades, swaps and pullbacks that could go against me by hundreds of pips. The main take-away is that I realized that this is actually stress free for me and I can take this way beyond my healthy age with lots of free spare time on my hands.
I like to scale in from past experience and by hook or crook, my first trade is always my worst one. For this reason I can have 10 trades go against me before I find the right trade and I eliminate as I go along. In the past I catered for 20 trades to go against me which would have been reasonable based on what I would need for longer term trading and a fair assumption was made to go towards .05c. I can now look towards 0.10c per trade at 10 trades per pair, as I have grown this account. Throwing a dollar lot into my first trade will be disastrous for me. I can have 100 plus trade open at any given time so I need to be cautious.
Anyway enough rambling.
