I try to stay away from political discussions, however this may be a case of good old "Desinformatsiya". Only Russian state-owned media organizations are disseminating the news. Until the claims of Ukraine firing mortar shells can be confirmed, I still see long as a possible direction in the near-to-medium term.

Nonetheless, I am out of this trade because wow wtf was that last candle, right guys

The Sputnik is a Russian state-owned news agency, news website platform and radio broadcast service. It was established by the Russian government-owned news agency Rossiya Segodnya. So is the other main Russian website that is reporting on the attack, RIA.ru.

This isn't a statement on corporate vs independent media, so don't even think about bringing the conversation there. Like I said, I don't like political discussions. However in this case, these news agencies have had very controversial histories regarding propaganda allegations and Russian government control.

OK, sidestepping the Corporate/State Media argument (which are one and the same, imo) we can agree the market at large "bought the rumor", bonds up, stocks down, risk off. If the geopolitical risk fades and there's no escalation or if this whole scenario was manufactured from whole cloth (which I don't believe) the outcome will be the same and risk will dissipate.

Thanks for respecting my boundary, that's so incredibly rare on the internet Yes, we can absolutely agree on the way this news is affecting the markets. I want to be hopeful and say it will correct but EU is looking far too uncertain. For now, I'm going risk off until things are clearer.

Edit: Yes I do have similar thoughts about Corporate/State Media, media is in many ways the 4th estate/branch of government. But in this case specifically, Russian state-owned media can't be trusted completely because of its political stake in the conflict. Russia also has a long-storied and well-documented use of dezinformatsiya.

Off-topic question. I think I know the answer to this, but just wanna make sure: If there's a "run on the banks" in a given country, how will that effect that country's currency, at least in the short-term?
