In short what is a "curvilinear" Envelope ?

A curvilinear Envelope is a composite of :

- a Diagonal Angle (Gann)
- an Horizontal Line (Murrey)
- a Vertical Underlying Trend (Hurst)

all 3 components have a common point : The Division by 8 of the Price Range

I have always said you are one of the True Trading Gods and yes I must admit I think I have tested your patience more than once, but always you have helped me and presented a detailed response to back your own point of view, you have listened and replied to all the guys questions
Tbh your main Method is Envelopes but you have presented a few other ideas that can be added or even traded as a standalone idea, which all have their merits
I think Swede hit the nail on top of the head, when he mentions Confluence, The trick is getting the balance just right, not to much but enough to give confidence to press the button
You have encouraged newbies and guys that at least have a little idea of trading or think they have, by your constant post's and live trades
You have given us good solid core trading methods and been gracious enough to let us add our own bits so we can think we are a bit of a guru now

Hello there,

I've been reading the early parts of this thread and it is very informative indeed. I'm an MT4 user and I downloaded the indicator that draws the channels on the chart according to the 32, 128 and 256 period averages. If you stick to the lower timeframes, so, H1 or less, the channels look OK. However, if you go to higher timeframes, the channels don't seem to contain either the price action or, the "nested" channels.

When I was reading some of the documentation from post #1, the impression I got from reading the Tillman documentation is that he tried to create the initial channel to contains most of the price action from the timeframe. The next channel up contains the initial channel and any protruding price action from extremes of price.

Because of this, as I said initially, I noticed that using 32, 128 and 256 MA based channels doesn't appear to contain price action from the higher timeframes too well. For example, the 256 channel on a typical D1 timeframe doesn't contain either the 128 channel, the 32 channel or price.

I guess my question is, do you experienced guys use different MA values for higher timeframes and if so, what might they be? If there are different approaches when using higher timeframes that I have perhaps missed, I'd appreciate your advice.

Thanks @OAPDave - that makes a big difference to the look of the channels. Do you use 9760 for just the D1 chart? If there was a benchmark timeframe for the original 256 value, I guess you could just multiply (or divide) it out relative to the higher (or lower) timeframe you are running on. Would you care to share your reason for 9760? If you don't want to, that's fine too

I just noticed that my version of the indicator doesn't have the ability to change the MA value of 256. Could you very kindly point me to the one you use?

Hi ToBeSure.....every timeframe needs to be set individually....that is the reason for the pip setting under Inputs once you have the chart on your screen.....reason this out for sec.....the price range between high and low, on average, on a 5 minute chart would not be the same on an hourly chart.

You really should have the latest version....here it is

Thanks @Swede. I understand now and yes, the ranges between an M5 and D1 chart are obviously very different. When you set these values, is it a case of "trial and error" or, do you have some kind of formula to arrive at the best pip value per chart?

1.3700 should easily be reached now.....keep an eye on that strong support level....

ps@ ToBeSure...I use a 550 setting for my gbp 5 min chart...it sometimes depends on the market overall...if we are only ranging I will pull it down to about 500, but when we have a good strong market reversal. I find the 550 shows my areas of interest better....we all have our preference..

I do have a formula I use but it is only a first setting...then I tweak it in to where I find the 256 outer bands touch and reverse more than coincidence. What the setting is in pips....when you see 550 pips...it is really 55.0 (as the settings are in 10ths.)....Measure the pips from the center band to the outer band....to see if it is a realistic setting....do that with all time frames and soon you will have very accurate settings....

Edit......once you have a setting that appears accurate, scroll your chart back a couple weeks and see the reactions....you will know if your setting is within reason. Remember, perfection is only found in rocket science, these settings are only alerting you of probable reversal points. Always use stops

I would like to think so, but it is sitting very close to support, Asia is well known to reverse NY so only a guess atm.

Being aware of potential market movers as important as technicals at times...in a couple hours Fed speak could do just so.....

Euro certainly on my watch list today...gotta remember last weeks NFP, very strong numbers for USD...now with Fed Talk today could be the catalyst for change in price...we shall see....
