The importance of having the right mindset

I have a unique insight into subconcious bias and how it plays a role in life. 6 years ago I went through a stressful period and it triggered what became chronic insomnia. For years I battled with this trying various medications and programs without success. It wasn't until I began studying the efficacy of CBT for sleep and coupled with meditation did I realise how easily the mind is corrupted.

It was only after months of self exploration did I find the cause of my insomnia is a belief system I built in my subconcious that cast doubt and instilled fear of sleep. My mind was literally preventing me from sleeping and there was no logic or substance to it, yet it persisted.

When I started having success and breaking this self instilled belief system, I begin sleeping naturally again. As time moved forward this belief system weakened but it was very easy for a single thought to materialise into a sleepless night.

This experience made me think about how this applies to trading. It would be incredibly easy for you to instill a negative bias about trading and this changes your thought process. I have proven that my mind can subconsciously convince itself it can't sleep and this made my thinking about sleep result in the very thing I was trying to avoid.

As traders, if you don't believe in success and have a fear of the market taking you out, your mind will guide your desicions such that you are almost guaranteed to fail and you won't even be consciously aware it is your fault. Information that disagrees with your belief system will be blocked and you will never know it.

This might all be difficult to process and understand if you haven't experienced first hand how your mind and belief systems manipulate your thought processes. The key to solving my insomnia was challenging those negative thoughts and also regular mindfulness meditation. Perhaps such activities will have life changing outcomes for many traders.

Totally agree. I had an interesting experience not too long ago while I was on some strong pain medication and was right on the edge of falling asleep. It was like I perceived the presence of my subconscious as a unique entity. I’m a visual person so I will often “see” things. But I saw this person who was me - but also somewhat unrecognizable - at a huge, old school switchboard receiving unfathomable amounts of information. The person was then making connections and routing just a small amount of info up to my conscious mind.

It really made me aware of how much we miss due to our own habits and beliefs. Like, how much opportunity stares us in the face each day that we just don’t perceive? And I’m not talking about trades.

Sorry to hear that.

Lack of sleep is such a serious condition. Most people do not realize how serious lack of sleep really is. They usually pass it off casually in conversation however lack of sleep leads to heart problems, neurological problems, obesity, and other issues like cancer.

Your body needs to sleep for a reason. Even if your a good sleeper you should not wake up with an alarm clock. Instead let your body sleep the amount of time it wants and get up naturally.

The good side of lack of sleep, and no pun intended, is they always have clinical trials for them. You can earn a lot of money and get your problem fixed at the sametime.

Update:

I have been testing some of the indices I have built on a test account. I have used a simple technical setup that places a trade in the direction of the index for intraday trades. Frankly I am not sure what to make of this. Yes I was having some fun with the trade sizes but these have been kept static so as the account has grown, the overall risk has reduced. At the start the risk was 5% per trade and now its 0.8% per trade. Anyway this is unimportant because the whole purpose of the testing is to validate the indices coupled with simple intraday technical setups. Effectively a mix of fundamentals which the indices proxy, and technicals.

Anyway the testing began on the 19th of October and since the account has recorded 95 trades, 1 loss, and an extraordinary 700% gain. I am in no illusion this type of return is sustainable and at the end of the day I'll be happy with a 60% yearly gain from this as a baseline.

Still more testing to do and a alot of more work on the indices. My time is stretched at the moment so I can only afford an hour or 2 a day on working on the indices. I still think I can reach completion on this by the end of Q1 2021.

The indices are still in dev running on a development laptop with no automation or cloud hosted infrastructure. So it is not feasible given my restricted time with so much going on to be sharing indices that can be used for trading. I can however share the technical setup I have been using.

6 years of insomnia. One stressful period caused a couple of nights of no sleep and once you start worrying about sleep, you are doomed. What happens is you start to build a new belief system and weaken one that's worked all your life. CBT + mindfulness meditation took a month to work as i had to relearn a belief system i had left behind.

you need to look for cbt for insomnia - not regular cbt - plenty of stuff on youtube and articles - i found that course was better as you get a support group in addition to videos and a program to follow.

Yeah, many times i predict that I won't sleep so it kind of fullfills the prophecy... many times, I'll fall asleep out of complete tiredness prior to the alarm going off a couple hours later.
