I thought it just rolled round in a cycle. Everyone's arguing about the relativity of it all in a spectacular chaos, desperately trying to work out what is the cause or attach an event to an effect.

I think you might be missing a couple of possibilities:

1. achieves weekly ATR by combination of some above 1.1787 and some below 1.1695 - could be 40 above, 57 below or any two values
2. weekly ATR is not achieved ie this week is below average to make up for other weeks that are over average.

By strict definition you are probably correct about the gambling. I tend however to think of a casino where odds are against us so the question we then need to ask ourselves is does our system give us an edge? Do you know your win %? (also keep in mind that even a high win % doesn't guarantee profitable trading given you can lose big and win small.) Glad you are aware of things like overtrading and impatience as these forms of being undisciplined remove most edges we might have.
