Friday coming we have an interesting event. "Bank of England's conference celebrating 20 years of independence, in London".

So it begged the question of what has the bank actually achieved in that 20 years of independence?

Well....

(all my opinion of course)

No longer has monetary policy and fiscal policy been aligned to provide a coordinated management of the economy. In fact IMO they've been at odds with one another and frequently worked against each other. (e.g. Government tightening & BOE loosening combined effect - bubble and little else) - poor quality stimulation at best...

BOE has managed to lose control of the banking system. With the Prudential Regulatory Authority (an arms length subsidiary part of the Bank) having responsibility for financial prudence and the Financial Conduct Authority having responsibility for conduct.

Treasury was able to run amok with all sorts of spending plans that took no account of other economic issues.

There has built up over a 20 year period a massive bubble in housing that no-one is going to want to burst.

We've ended up with effective sub-zero interest rates when the true rate is combined with all the QE

We've now got near stagnant growth numbers with an economy being squeezed by government and peppered with unsustainable goodies (free money for the banks etc.) by BOE...

The banking system now has zero moral hazard. They can do what they like and up to and including betting the farm and the tax payer will foot the bill and they just get richer.

So pat yourselves on the back - Central Bankers and Politicians alike. This has been a resounding success story.......

Y'all have problems that give you a different perspective. Were most of the immigration problems created because of rules imposed with the creation of the EU?

I would say yes Jim, although prior to EU membership we did have various immigration acts and did have immigration episodes which did cause issues during the 60's but nothing on the scale of where we are at now but if we think of it like coastal erosion it gives a clearer picture. It's been happening for decades but the more unstable the cliffs become the more you notice that the building close to the cliff edge is about to fall into the sea. I personally noticed something was wrong in 1991 when I went to a library in Tower Hamlets that had started stocking in earnest books in URDU.

Personally .... I think the immigration problems were caused by two things.

a) some fuck-wits bombed the hell out of Iraq, smashed their social infrastructure ... and just moved out. Some people seem surprised that ISIS (or any other name that means the same) swooped in to fill the void. Exactly how the Syrian business got started I can't remember (I should look....) but therein lies the start of some of the influx.

At least the accession to foreigners has now been removed from the driving test. All applicants are expected to be able to read traffic sign written in English. Interpreters not allowed.

Interesting.

I thought it was a smart move of Gordon FW Brown to assign the blame for all ills to the BoE when he took the Chancellery in '97.

I remember him saying "I have abolished boom and bust", and thought to myself 'what are you saying?'

Now that we have enjoyed nearly ten years of 'zero interest rates', I was slightly encouraged that for a while the BoE resisted hitting the zero-button. Well now we are near as dammit on zero. I look to the Far East and ask myself why people thought we could succeed with ZIRP when the Japanese failed, and for so long. I think it boils down to that we should have gone through the extreme pain back in 2008 and we would now be in a much better situation, ....probably.

Gordon Brown - probably the worst chancellor this country has ever had. Talk about slight of hand, he was constantly pulling the wool over people's eyes about fiscal prudence all the while doling out the cash at a hitherto unseen and eye watering pace to any old scheme that could at little more than a cursory glance fulfill the "Nanny (We're looking after you in your own best interests) State" approach! And when the banks crashed because no-one was keeping an eye on them he stepped up his game and gave it to bankers and cronies...
