I agree with you, but it is more difficult than first meets the eye.

The discussion is on another forum and the point has been made by some that universal income basically kills the incentive to work.

The proponents of UI then pointed out that the current benefits system already kills the incentive to work, and that universal income would cut down on a huge amount of means testing and therefore government bureaucracy.

The proponents go further and argue that there is more incentive to work under a universal income, because since everybody gets a basic income, work always pays a dollar extra for every dollar earnered. They argue that this is in contrast to the current benefits system which penalises a worker because your benefits are removed when you start working meaning you could be working and earning only a fraction more than you would get on benefits.

When I did the sums of how much this would cost it came out at £420 billion which is 8 times the current welfare spend, and when I pointed that out I was being 'critical' LMAO.

The trouble is that no one will give me a direct answer when I ask for how the system will work. It's purely an idea, but bizzarely it should be implemented NOW!

UBI is socialist bollox. UI would require greater levels of taxation. You don't fix the current benefits system with an alternative system that is merely simpler to administer, a better computerised system would achieve that in the first year with about a six month pay back. UI would be a disaster for the economy make it unproductive and uncompetitive. Entrepreneurs would set up shop in other domains to get away from the necessarily high tax regime required to support UI. Outside investment to the UK would be lost because no one in their right mind would want to be funding people to sit on their arse at home. So UI delivers lower investment, lower innovation, less industry, job losses, less productivity and a nation of entitled lazy fluckers. But still we don't have an answer on who is going to pay for it

It's been tested, something like if you get on the train at Lille with a ticket to Paris, but then stay on the train instead of getting off, it will take you all the way to St. Pancras, no checks.
