Japanese traders take record long dollar position

By Lindsay Whipp in Tokyo
Published: October 11 2009 18:06 | Last updated: October 11 2009 18:06

Leveraged Japanese foreign exchange day traders aggressively bought US dollars last week, bringing their net long dollar position to a record, according to an estimate by JPMorgan Chase.
The investment bank calculated in a report on Friday that the amount of long dollar positions against the yen rose sharply to $26bn last week, compared with just $9bn a week earlier. The investment bank based its calculations on data provided by the Tokyo Financial Exchange.
Junya Tanase, a currency strategist at JPMorgan, said that if the dollar broke this year’s low against the yen of Y87.10, there could be “huge” selling of dollars by margin traders. The positions of the margin traders reflects the popular strategy of buying on dips and selling on rallies, he said.

Wassup?

Got back from the beach this morning, yesterday it was sunny and crowded, so we decided to get back early. A 1h:30 smooth trip can become a 6h nightmare if you leave the place at the wrong time.

Well.. if you don't ride helos

If the trendline does hold, and we get a daily/weekly close above 1.48 then according to convention the double low comes into play and we target 1.7. In the meantime I'm short.

I think it's relevant cause we can see the bulls ain't letting go of this easily. What does anybody else think?

Not crazy. Although 1.50 big figure and 1.60 historical highs must be cracked before.

Seen comments that Gold is not going up just on speculations. Central banks around the world are buying bullions - yeah, the real deal to stuff the vaults - to preserve their reserves...

That is, nobody trusts the greenback anymore.

I wouldn't be surprised. Here in the UK little stalls have popped up in shopping centres where dealers will buy jewellery. On the television there are advertisments for mail order evaluation. I think this is a clue that it's the real deal and not just speculation.

i think you people are a little blind. they have been doing commercials for sell your gold for cash the last year here in the u.s. since the economy turned south. the banks are buying gold and stuffing their vaults to get the price up because they already hedged it was going up. they are taking it off the market to limit supply and drive the price up even further. when they have made enough profits to justify the pay to their execs and clean up their balance sheets, they will dump it on the market, the price will plummet and they will have shorted it as well. they will have made billions while all the suckers are flat broke.

some guy i know did some research about the gold market, you just gave me the last piece of the puzzle. gold will do what oil did last year.

Great video. I kept wanting to pull on the brakes but thinking "no it's going to skid out". Some rider. How he didn't get injured I don't know. Didn't notice any safety padding on this video.

J&J nice profit, missed revenues..

Intel reported profit and revenue that both substantially outpaced expectations Tuesday as the company's shares were halted in late trading.

Stocks unch in the US, slightly higher in Brazil, probably playing catchup because of yesterday's holiday...

Boring day... (thought USD would take on the chin in the forex market)...
