I guess they ain't really planning on meeting these obligations either. If you don't like the game... change the rules

Quite natural given that they know their days are numbered in government. They will be replaced in due course by and even more austere government. The Greeks will be dragged, screaming and crying, to a better GDP. The days of (capital subsidised) social democracy are numbered.

Euro gains as Greece passes austerity steps

The euro edged up on Monday after Greece's parliament approved an austerity bill that put the country a step closer to securing much-needed funds, though market players worried about more hurdles before lenders seal a bailout deal.

Violent street protests in Athens and the departure of six Greek cabinet ministers underscored the difficulty of implementing unpopular steps.
Eurozone finance ministers also expect Greece to explain how 325 million euros ($430 million) of this year's total budget cuts -- as yet unspecified -- will be achieved before it agrees to the bailout in a meeting on Wednesday.

"I'm not sure if it's time for a hurrah. It's still uncertain whether eurozone finance ministers will agree on the bailout,» said Masafumi Yamamoto, chief forex strategist at Barclays Capital.

The euro gained about 0.3 percent to $1.3235, recouping some of the losses made on Friday and about a cent below a two-month high of $1.3322 hit last week.

Its 90-day moving average of $1.3314 is seen as a major resistance point, though a break there could open the way for a test around $1.35.
Highlighting exasperation felt by Germany, the country's finance minister, Wolfgang Schaeuble, said in an interview with German newspaper Welt am Sonntag that Greek promises on austerity measures are no longer good enough because so many vows have been broken.

There are also concerns that hedge funds may have built up sufficiently large holdings of Greek bonds to scupper «voluntary» bond swap deals.
On the other hand, the euro is likely to draw some support from signs of stability in other eurozone countries, with the spread of Portuguese bond yields over German bonds slipping to one-month lows.

Fear of a major banking crisis in Europe has subsided as the European Central Bank is offering to provide an unlimited amount of three-year loans for the second time later this month after the first such operation in December.

This has prompted institutional investors to cut short positions since January, said Kimihiko Tomita, head of forex at State Street.

"If you think there will be no Armageddon, there is no need to take new euro short positions now. But on the other hand, it's questionable whether investors will become so positive about the euro as to become net long,» Tomita said.

US data showed speculators have been cutting their net euro short positions for the past two weeks with their net euro short position falling to 140,593 contracts last week from a record 171,347 contracts two weeks before.

Kno's Comments:

We start with the pattens from about 6:00 PM EST or 12:00 GMT when the vote was in favor of taking Billions of new loans. That part was never in doubt. However what happened to get to the approval will affect perceptions.

The pattern has been runs to 1.3260 initially with little conviction. Weakness again and testing of 1.3200 and then a new run to the present High of 1.32778.

Europe is now open so Money Flow now kicks in. EUR/JPY has moved past 1.0300 to 1.0304 however there has been less correlation than normal between EUR/USD and EUR/JPY because of Intervention and weakness in USD/JPY which is now at 77.68

Gold is moving up now at $1,732.00 US Spot.

I will watch patterns between now and 7:00 PM EST when the North American Retail Trade will come aboard. Then CNBC will have many experts ? offer their views. There is more chance for negative news than positive before Wednesday so I still see short term trend on EUR/USD as down for the next 5 days.

I see there is another run to the High of 1.32778 so next Resistance is at 1.3300 with 1.3335 above that. Be aware, observant and try to understand what the short term PERCEPTIONS might be until REALITY comes back into focus.

European finance chiefs get the second chance in a week to pull Greece back from the brink of collapse after lawmakers in Athens approved the austerity measures demanded for a financial lifeline.

Greece “will be saved in one way or another,” German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schauble told newspaper Welt am Sonntag on Sunday, though the country must “do its homework.”

Euro-area finance ministers will convene in Brussels on Wednesday in an extraordinary meeting that was set after they declined in a special session on Feb. 9 to ratify the 130 billion-euro ($172 billion) package. Frustrated after two years of missed budget targets, the European authorities demanded Greek officials put their verbal commitments into law.

The Greek parliament in the early morning hours of Sunday passed the legislation as rioters battled police and set fire to buildings in downtown Athens. Still, Schauble told German lawmakers on Feb. 10 that Greece was set to miss deficit goals, suggesting that the measures may fall short.
“I’m really wondering now whether so much damage has been done that this marriage no longer can be rescued,” Erik Nielsen, chief global economist at UniCredit SpA in London, wrote in a note to clients. He predicted that the measures would be approved and that Greece will be able to make a 14.5 billion- euro bond payment on March 20.

The euro gained 0.4 percent to $1.3243 at 8:55 a.m. in Athens following the overnight vote. The currency slid 0.7 percent from its two-month high against the US dollar on Feb. 10 after the finance ministers’ decision.
“I’m more than unhappy with the political cliffhanger taking place in Greece over the past few weeks,” German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle told Der Spiegel magazine.

From IFR at 3:45 AM .... The Euro is drawing further support from the latest Chinese headlines on policy and bond buying but with Chinese Vice-President Xi Jinping visiting US such headlines were always likely.

EUR/USD edges to fresh session/intraday high 1.3283 to put further topside stops in view but these orders are not seen as massive and better size orders are seen above 1.3300 expiry level.

Hi buddy how are you. last week was awesome. My pro trades came in as normal but i was also trading using directional movement and made many many pips with e/u and g/u perhaps it was beginners luck lol.I dont come in here too often now as i believe its losing its way i am a trader and i dont need to slate any other country or government off. we should remain focused and trade trade trade regardless of the liars in any government so happy trading my friend and everyone

Despite all the rioting, arson and political revolt, the Greek deal vote still passed with a wide majority for the yes side. However, that does not mean that Greece will get the financial aid they so desperately need. Nope, not at all. What it means is that Greece will cut off it's penis to delay the oh so unavoidable default which has to come at some point... all in the hopes that maybe, perhaps, with some kind of miracle, they will be able to borrow from EuroBonds. Yeah right!!! Not as long as each EZ country maintains sovereignty over it's fiscal policies.

The Greeks politicians who voted "yes" have now sent a very clear message to the world that they will whore themselves out for a few bucks. So, just as poetically as I expected out of all this, the Troika is now saying that no decision will be made until March. Of course, I wouldn't make a decision until the last minute either. I mean from a lender's perspective, I wouldn't give Greece a single penny since the ones in power have more than shown on many occasions that their word means nothing. Just think, they haven't even met the requirements of the first bailout package yet... and here they are groveling for seconds.

Greek politicians: "Please Sir, may I have some more?"
Troika: "More??? More??? You want More??? Muhahahahaha. Ve shall zee."

...and that's were's we stand. The market is relieved that we are not facing an imminent default, but they're still not buying the crap that this episode is over. Even if Greece gets the 14 or so billion Euros by March 20th to pay off the bond holders, it still won't be over. It's just another episode of can kicking and we're running out of road in a hurry. Nobody in their right mind, not even people who have zero understanding of economics, would ever expect an economy to grow itself out of its debt problems by borrowing more whilst imposing the harshest of austerity measures. It's just all bullocks. My heart goes out to the average honest Greek citizen. What a disgrace!!!
