I got one during the day! Ok it was Friday afternoon, but I took it anyway. Good for +15 so far. I'll close it soon before the Friday afternoons spreads do it for me.

EDIT: I posted M5 chart accidentally. I took the signal on M15 but I was monitoring on M5. Don't want any confusion about TFs!

Hi FH,

Kudos on presenting the best extant thread on breakout strategies. My thanks for sharing with us!

There are a number of squalou indicator iterations both here and on the "tools" thread. I am a bit confused as to which version is your "official" version? Please clarify...and many thanks!

Got +30 from that trade. For a Friday afternoon, trading remotely to my home computer while I'm at work, I think that's about the farthest I should push my luck!

Yep, Logmein - the free version. I've used all kinds of remote solutions (I'm an I.T. guy) and that's the easiest of them all. And you can't beat the price!

Hi AlienFrog,
congratulations!
May I ask you how did you filtered out and did not take the previous short signal?
I post here my 15M TF. It is pretty similar to yours (eventually "pipwise" levels are different due to brokers' differences).

Bye

good question, why didn't you take a short position when it first broke out from the low side?

@Betterlife and Newbtrader: Good question! The answer is simple: I didn't get the short signal like your chart shows. When I look closer, I see that our boxes are drawn differently. I marked on my screenshot where your box would have been drawn.

Probably caused by different indi settings, maybe also different brokers. I use Oanda. Here are my indi settings.

Box Length: 24
BoxTimeFrame: 15
BoxRange: 12
BoxBufferPips: 2
DaysBack: 100
MinBarsClosedOutsideBO: 2

This gives me 2.5 boxes per week, in keeping with Forexhard's recommendation of 2-3 boxes per week.

Thank you very much AlienFrog.

Yes, my settings are different from yours:
I leave the ATR-ADR decide the BoxRange, as explained before (in a post that nobody took care of commenting...).
And in the moment box size on this pair is 13 pips.
These settings give me 3.7 boxes/week, which is much lower than the 5 max limit set by FH.
I have a larger buffer than yours, 5 pips.
The broker is FXDD.
Box size/position was not so critical in this example, simply the two bars following the huge bearish pin before the reversal were some millimeters below my buffer (the second one is below it also in your pick).

I think that, when a system is "robust", such kind of millimetric-pipwise differences should be considered just "bad luck" (preparation do not meet opportunity all the time: I like your signature).
BTW, in my case I had to switch off my laptop exactly when my script would have placed the long order on the other side, (again preparation not matched with opportunity) and therefore the net result is a -1R, instead of a +0.6 R (-1+1.6).
I'm interested in backtesting, now, how deleterious overall such millimetric mishaps will be on the total potential of the system.

Bye

The reason why AF's settings are different than your is because AF has decided to follow my example 100%, or very close to it. Since you have decided not to, then no one is surpised when your settings don't match, or when your trade opportunities don't add up the same as ours. This is also why no one replied to your earlier post. Because we don't want to waste our time on templates that don't match our own.

No amount of backtesting will help if you still aren't using the right template to do it with.

Good evening Mr. FH, and thank you for your comments, useful as usual.
So, you mean that all of you are using for U/J
Box Length: 24
BoxTimeFrame: 15
BoxRange: 12
BoxBufferPips: 2
DaysBack: 100
MinBarsClosedOutsideBO: 2?

Good to know: I was convinced to follow, if not 100%, at least 98% your guidelines, besides the AutoBox setting. And in fact my boxes are 13 pips, instead of 12, they are not 26... Clearly I was wrong, and now I know the right parameters. You know: I am not the kind of guy wanting spoon feeders, and so I was trying to come up with my setup. Wrong again!

Sorry for the way I wrote my first post: eventually it leaded to misinterpretation. That one was by no means a suggestion of a modification, but a request for explanation. Why you make it that way... It is a bit sad that one cannot ask for an explanation, because nobody will feel glad to answer or take it as a "waste of time".

Bye

Nice! I love the simplicity! How far away from the breakout do you place your orders ? Also do you re enter the position after a false breakout?
My trades are 100% profitable 65% of the time!
