The Gambler by Fyodor Dostoyevsky

Reading The Gambler by Fyodor Dostoyevsky will evoke all kinds of emotional responses within you, and you’ll get drawn into the story whether or not you want to. The book takes you into the world of the roulette game, and you get to see gambling through the eyes of a gambler. Gambling is addictive, and you see the gambler wanting another “hit” because he thinks that the next time will be different, he will win the next round, he has to recover what he has just lost. You see the compulsive nature of the gambler.
The protagonist in The Gambler by Fyodor Dostoyevsky is Alexei Ivanovich who is a tutor to a Russian family living in Germany. The family (the General, his two children Misha and Nadia, his step-daughter Polina Alexandrovna) is bankrupt and has been living in a hotel well above their means. The General and his family are waiting for the family matriarch, Grandmother, to die so that they can secure an inheritance to pay off their debts and put them once again in good financial standing. It’s actually quite morbid really because they frequently send telegrams to Russia enquiring if grandmother has died yet. They receive news from Russia telling them she will last only a few days.
There are two different kinds of gambling taking place in the story – the physical act of gambling and the metaphorical act of gambling. In The Gambler, you see Alexei Ivanovich playing roulette and you also see Grandmother gambling when she visits Germany. The General is engaged to Mademoiselle Blanche who will only marry him if he’s financially secure, so she too is waiting around for Grandmother to die. The General borrowed a substantial amount of money from Frenchman, Monsieur le Comte, so he too has an interest in Grandmother dying. They are gambling that Grandmother will die very soon.
Polina asks Alexei to gamble on her behalf because it is somewhat frowned upon for women to play in the casino. Alexei is in love with Polina but it’s an unhealthy love and he doesn’t even think that she feels the same about him. He tells her that he would do anything for her and she tests him and he complies, sometimes doing absurd things like insulting someone at her request. But Alexei resents playing the roulette on behalf of Polina because deep down he feels that he would win if he plays for himself.
Unexpectedly Grandmother appears in Germany, she has recovered from her near death experience and she sees how the family is living. Of course they are very shocked to see her and hopes are dampening, and they realize that their gamble on her quick death is not paying off. Grandmother insists that Alexei take her to the casino. She spends time observing and asking questions and then she starts betting. Initially, she wins a considerable amount of money, and she gives some to everyone except her family because she heard of their constant enquiries to find out if she was dead. Alexei begs Grandmother to stop playing but she is hooked, so he refuses to play on her behalf.
Grandmother keeps playing, she finds people to take over from Alexei. She plays until she loses all the money she took with her to Germany, which was a substantial amount, and she has to borrow money from Englishman, Mr Astley to pay her passage back to Russia.
While Grandmother is gambling, all concerned see the inheritance shrinking and there is mounting pressure on the General to get her to stop. The General loses his fiancé, and he loses everything because he used whatever assets he had as surety for the loan. Grandmother eventually dies but it’s several months later.
In the story you also see Alexei becoming addicted to gambling. It’s almost as if he is feverish, and something comes over him and he has to play roulette. Shortly after Grandmother returns to Russia Alexei wins a substantial amount of money, and wants to give some to Polina but she refuses to take it, and leaves. However, Mademoiselle Blanche encourages him to go France and spend the money, which he does, mostly on her. Easy comes, easy goes.
The Gambler is very well written but I found the story very unsettling, wasted lives and wasted opportunities. A big lesson is not to spend promised money, wait until you have the funds in your hand. It doesn’t matter how good you are at gambling, you cannot beat the system all the time because no one wins all the time. Even though I found The Gambler by Fyodor Dostoyevsky unsettling, I recommend it. It’s a realistic look into the world of gambling.

Forex Factory is the biggest Forex site IMO. That is why a lot of pro traders put their systems here! and provide everyone with their complete! system with Pdf's and indicators. They do not require people to join their skype group or any other social media group to make them more popular.

You ASSUMED that I was ignorant and called me ignorant. When you ASSUME you make an (ASS) out of (ME) and (YOU).
You called me ignorant without knowing anything about me but I am calling you an ASS cause I know you ASSUME things about other people, so that makes you both ignorant and an ASS.

It seems that you have an alternative motive for not listing indicators here and enticing newbies to join your skype group or else you would've just placed the indicators here and be done with it. This makes me realize that your system is total garbage because you are obviously just trying to lure noobies into joining your skype group.

A little about me the ignorant: I have been trading for 6 years and I have lost 2 accounts. I have been consistently profitable for the last year and a half. I am constantly sharpening my forex arsenal. Other than my BB scalping I want to add more methods that is why I look for new and interesting methods not to trade them in my real account.

Oh and one advice to you create your own ideas and words stop posting what someone else wrote in some forex book, be original if your English is good enough for it.

Negative people like you Destroy mentality of helping others. Lots of good trader stop sharing anything in FF because they know they are doing everything for helping others and people like you comes and started to say good traders are doing everything for their hidden intention. A lot of people want to learn what to do to make money in the market and I’ve written a plethora of articles on that topic. From trading strategies to money management, to how to perfect your entry into the market, I’ve written extensively about the various aspects of making money trading.
However, what a lot of people need to know is not just good trading offense, but good defense as well. Good defense is much more important for a trader than good offense. I’ve also written about this topic of defense in trading, but not as much as the ‘offense’ of trading. So, today, due to several emails I’ve received over the years, I thought this might be a good topic to help beginning and seasoned traders alike. Let’s discuss what I do to avoid giving back profits and losing money to the market.

1. Avoid the chop, avoid the whipsaw

The number one thing you can do to avoid losing large sums of money to the market, something that is 100% within your control, is not manifesting trades out of thin air when there simply is nothing to trade.
The longer you look at your chart to try and make sense of it when there simply is nothing to trade, the higher chance you will lose. A good trade should jump out at you without having to stare at the charts for 30 minutes to see it.
If there’s nothing there, don’t trade. Staring won’t help a trade form. If it’s not there, it’s not there. No signal, no trend, just avoid it.
Also, avoid trading choppy markets because it is these market conditions that often cause traders to manifest trades that aren’t there. Good, obvious trades, form in trending markets and (or) from key chart levels, not in sideways chop.
The market is guided by levels and if the market you’re looking at isn’t clearly demonstrating that it’s respecting levels then it may be best to stand aside for a while. If you’re in a friendly market, this will be obvious, if you’re not in a friendly market things will be quite haphazard and choppy. The market will tell you what it’s doing around key levels; breaking, holding, re-testing etc.
If you want to avoid losing your shirt, pants and the whole farm to the market, re-read this section again and follow the wisdom consistently.

1. Don’t risk more than you can mentally afford to lose

Please don’t brush this off as just another cliché statement on money management: Every single person including myself at times, has risked well above their purse limit. Whether it’s adding to a position, risking too much per trade or just being greedy, if you want to survive in the market, you must start thinking about the money as if it’s real and in your hand. You must determine your set amount per trade, your initial trading capital and until you can prove to yourself that you are successful for a period of time, these parameters and dollar amounts should not change under any circumstance.
If you sat down and said your risk per trade is $100, don’t change that until you’ve had a period of success because there’s just no logical mathematical reason to do so. There’s no point in trading if you don’t aim to make at least a 1:1 risk reward per trade or greater (ie: targets need to be wider than stops). You would be surprised how many people don’t even understand that basic concept.

1. Day-trading fallacy and over-trading.

Another big reason so many traders lose so much money, is that they give in to the allure and temptation of day-trading. What day-trading is, is over-trading. I have written many articles on the perils of over-trading, but since it’s such a big reason traders unnecessarily lose money in the market, it’s important to discuss it again…
I believe in and teach a low-frequency trading approach. You must let your trades play out without interfering, because trades often take longer than expected to play out. Markets will often go further than we think, and the only way to get on-board big moves in the market (which is what makes you a lot of money), is by being patient and leaving your trades alone.
The only real chance a smaller retail trader has (like you), is patiently waiting for obvious trades to set up and then taking a decent size position that you hold for a period of days or even weeks. Trying to day-trading, dodging in and out of the market multiple times a day, is a fool’s game that will leave you frustrated, angry and broke.

1. Develop and maintain the proper trading mindset

The proper trading mindset is one of neutrality. You must not become attached to any trade or position you enter. You must TRULY not care if a trade wins or loses. Once you start caring, you start getting emotional and that leads to trading mistakes like over-trading or risking too much.
Money management has the biggest effect on your emotions. What I mean is, managing your risk is the most powerful tool that you can use to make sure you remain neutral. You must determine what your dollar amount is that you can risk and be mentally OK with losing. If you get attached to a loss or win, trading will become an extremely difficult game where you feel like you’re constantly losing. Trading is essentially a game of math, by that I mean, risk reward; making sure your wins are greater than your losses. For the most part, if you apply logical entries, proper mathematics (risk management) and a neutral mindset, you do stand a chance in the competitive sport we call market speculation.
