I'm big for recycling and renewable energy, but I also am board with you Winston in a lot of things you said - though not completely.

My position would be one highly skeptical about man made climate change; certainly believe any change has been grossly exaggerated; certainly believe that the computer models are grossly unscientific in the sampling of data; but also believe it is possible for humans to have an impact - because there are 7 billion of us.

I also believe that we need to take of nature better, and that resources are limited and it is better generally to live within our means.

So far they have failed to produce more power than has been put in. So that needs to be addressed, which is one of the goals of ITER.

There is also this small fly in the ointment: "One of the missions for the later stages of ITER operation is to demonstrate the feasibility of producing tritium within the vacuum vessel. The world supply of tritium (used with deuterium to fuel the fusion reaction) is not sufficient to cover the needs of future power plants."

I remain a sceptic that fusion is viable, even though it is definitely desirable.

More changing room sights. Yesterday, there was an anorexic scarecrow thing, all saggy and crinkly skin with bones sticking out. Obligatory arse like bags, but it had two half bowling balls stuck to its chest, walking around starkers admiring itself in the mirrors... wtf?!

The kids have broken up from school now, so it means less going to the gym for me now, till January when it will be full of New Year's Resolutions. Blah, I hope the weather isn't too bad, so I will go outside instead. I don't like running in the gym anyway due to the lack of air, but it is quite entertaining staring at the meatheads with chicken legs. I sometimes gawp at them and wonder how easy it would be to poke them and knock them over, then run because they obviously can't... I sometimes have low-ish iron levels (it's a monthly thing) and coupled with the stuffy air, I can lose about 10%, but hey, I see it like altitude training, which is useful when skiing at 3000m.

I also wonder whether a massive adoption of fusion (or other nuclear) power is detrimental to global warming. It is the first power system to create energy that has not arrived from the Sun. Even oil is stored solar energy.

The Laws of Thermodynamics still applies. The First Law (the conservation of energy) states that energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be transferred or changed from one form to another. The energy exists at the atomic level.

The fusion of lighter atoms into Helium releases the binding energy in the existence of Deuterium and Tritium nucleii. I suppose you could argue that the contained energy was always there even though it did not arrive directly from the Sun. If the reaction will yield energy using only Deuterium then there is hope of achieving a workable solution. If the Tritium is necessary specifically because its state-change from the ratio of protons to neutrons changes then the other law of thermodynamics applies ... you cannot get out more than you put in. Which basically means that they will never be able to make enough Tritium using breeder techniques.

On a different but related theme, it seems I was wrong in my assumption/belief about the power of the only so-far deployed atomic bombs. Their efficacy was in the environs of 20kt (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_bombings_of_Hiroshima_and_Nagasaki). Can you believe that I got to that hit by being distracted in a search for the constituents of WD40?

Ugh, saggy and crinkly but also anorexic makes me want to be sick lol. I was passing through the changing rooms yesterday to get to the men's toilets and there were some walruses walking about haha.

My gym is mostly filled with younger people though, that in itself causes problems because many don't have proper gym manners - like taking equipment that I just spent the time queuing for lol. I have gotten into some arguments with people and their gym manners

On the other extreme, there is a guy in the gym who must be 30 stones. He goes on the machines in bare feet, as I guess his feet are too fat for trainers and he sprays sweat everywhere. It's revolting. I don't understand these people; at what point do they decide they are a bit overweight and need to do something about it?

Humans are really rather arrogant to think they can alter in any significance earth's climate. This is especially true given that it is the sun that is the primary driving force behind our climate. Does anyone really think they can make a smidge difference in what the sun does?

Sea levels will rise and fall, temperatures will rise and fall and animals will inhale oxygen and expire CO2 and plants will use CO2 and make oxygen despite anything we do. CO2 is not a poisonous gas. It is a normal product of animal life. Efforts to label CO2 as a green house gas are grossly inaccurate as the greenhouse theory itself is inaccurate. CO2 has zero to do with climate change. Only the sun does.

Nothing has the ability to incrementally retain heat without some kind of expanding energy source. Exposure to a stable heat source alone will not result in increasing temperatures over time. The earth is continually cooling given the sun's relative stability at this time. The earth does not have the ability to continually heat up. It is really impossible at this time. However if the sun begins to expand into a super nova then that is different. Again we have no control over such events and would be consumed in such an event.

Efforts to label CO2 as a man-made climate changing gas are only meant to increase the power of government control of individual's lives. They want to tell us what to drive, when to drive, how far we can drive
and what kind of fuel we are allowed to use. They want to tell us what kind of light bulbs, we can use, toilets to use and how much red meat we can eat. All because they know better than us. THEY know better than us that man-made climate change is real and so they need to control every aspect of our daily lives.

Hello my name is Achille, and I am new to this site. I was browsing various forums and saw this one as being the most interesting. Are most people here from Great Britain? If so I had a question that is bothering me that I hope one of you can help answer so that I may get better perspective on a issue that is recently been contentious for me.

Why did Britain recently not vote or abstain on the UN resolution regarding Israel?

Anyway, thank you for any responses, and will look forward to learning what perspectives some of you may hold or what I can learn. Thank you in advance for your responses.

Hello Achille and welcome! No I wouldn't say that most are from the UK here, but it seems like this certain thread has a lot of Brits; maybe it's because we like winding each other up and keep coming back for more . Sorry, I can't answer your question because I don't have a clue, but I'm sure someone else maybe able to.
