sorry I must have not got my point across properly I know you were complaining with good reason in my opinion that if your doing a driving test in the UK it should be done in the native language just like if I moved to Germany it would be completely acceptable to expect me to do the test in German but under Tony B it was a deliberate decision not to make people do test's in English/learn English or fill in a housing form in English. At the time they did not care about integration as they did not feel that we in the UK had developed a superior culture so it was not necessary to make people integration with the Brits/accept and adapt to British culture/British values

am not surprised you did not completely understand my last 3 posts am not feeling well and have made a bit of a hash of things sorry mate

This morning on R4 there was a discussion about fee-paying schools ... again. Particularly today the practice of offering 'charitable' places to children of less well-off parents was being scrutinised. A headmaster was decrying the absence of government funding to allow him to offer more than the hundred or so places he already provided. Some other politico was complaining about how such schools were cherry-picking the brightest pupils.

There is a real disconnect between some people and the real world

I am delighted that new grammar schools are once again allowed to open, but I don't think it is going far enough. There is no need for "charitable" places at private schools, as the plans are to introduce new grammars firstly to more deprived areas. So, if a child is gifted and comes from a poor background, there will be grammar schools for them. The super selective grammars (not ordinary grammars) in this country, in my view, are far ahead of anything else, including private schools. They cream off the top 10-15% and the children are there on merit, not because of rich parents or some hare brained, leftie scheme borne out of jealousy.

The 11+ is a tough test and I believe most adults would struggle with it. It contains a topics beyond the National Curriculum at Primary level, so no matter how bright the child, they would probably not pass without extra tuition. I think that is what the lefties have a problem with, people who strive to better themselves through sheer hard work.

This subject is of great interest to me, and there is no simple answer. My eldest son went through the local school system, went on to University, achieved a 1st and now has a Ph.D. My youngest son followed the same path, but different middle school, was turned-off school in the middle years (around 9 - 12) and by the time he started the home-run to GCSE he had no real interest in academic stuff.

So there is no reason in general why the 'ordinary' system has much to do to improve (unless it has really deteriorated in the past decade).

However ... on the radio this morning they managed to persuade a couple of the youngsters to speak, not live I assume, and their perception was interesting. A young lady said that the main difference between her 'new' school and previous schools was that all the other pupils were focused upon learning and achieving. In the 'ordinary' schools there was no real interest in learning, and in my experience no real encouragement from the majority of parents.

I have to ask, who in their right mind would pay for education if they didn't have to. When I put my children through school, I had no choice but to pay for it, such were the awful results of the local state schools. I resent having to pay, but at the end of the day, my children's education came first and luxuries came second. Most of the parents at their schools were in the same boat. Sure there were rich kids and parents, but they were in the minority.

What you have described is an education lottery. Education is not a free service for the tax payer, we actually pay for through our taxes, yet we have little or no influence over its standards. Kids are at school for 6 hrs per day. That is 6 hours where we as parents are without influence. I expect the educating institution to enforce acceptable behaviour and adherence to studies. The state systems where I live, seemed unable to provide the basics, constantly catering for the lowest common denominator (the disruptive idiot, uninterested in being educated).

Yes there is Eaton, but not all fee paying schools engender such elite attitudes, most are about the education. There is nothing wrong with being able to speak properly, but I am not a fan of speaking like a Toff

They have no tools to 'encourage' acceptable behaviour. Furthermore some parents actually support their children in the face of complaining teachers attempting to create a learning environment. No doubt, in my mind at least, the same children who grow up to complain that their lack of opportunity is unfair.

Aww, thanks Exodus.

I hope you lot are all doing ok. Well I've been a little quiet partly because I'm feeling a bit disillusioned with this place, partly because I've been busy with Christmas stuff, partly because I've been spending a lot of time in the gym trying to conserve a certain level of fitness over the winter months as I do not do battling with the elements and partly because I'm a tad traumatised at the sights I have to witness at the said gym. In particular the changing rooms. It has always baffled me why the fatter and more hideous someone looks, the more they have the urge to parade around with all on show... Yesterday, it wasn't fat; it was like two carrier bags for an arse. Then I got into an argument with a nutter, who decided to virtually go on top of me despite a big, empty changing room. So I shoved her stuff onto the floor.

I still don't have my new car, because there are only two of those in the country and they both have oyster seats and interior trim. Now BMW have quoted £12k to change it! Damn, I should just get some shoe dye and a tin of Dulux and do it myself.

This is why I avoid the gym showers, I choose to just drive home and shower. Men's showering facilities are awful, it is one big room with no cubicles and normally older men walking around with their sausage on display - forget that.
