I'm sure we've all come across a movie at some point in our lives that made us think....."Hmmmmm? Is this something for me?" Characters that inspired us, events brought to the screen that captivated us, or something amazing we learned by watching "a flick"....so....
What are you favorite trading movies of all time?
This is perhaps not the most stellar trading movie ever, but it does bring me back to the days of my dad when he had to place trades on the phone via a broker....(oh my!)...and seeing that now just makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. This movie shows you what happens at the other side of that phone call. Say what you will, but Ben Affleck's "Welcome on board" speech is a classic. It personifies that ubertestosteroned self righteous attitude that Wall Street radiated back in the days.
#3 The Boiler Room
This is the movie that I would expect e-v-e-r-y-o-n-e here to have seen, not once, not twice, but nth times. Gordon Gecko is the reason why "Greed" became a brand, Bud Fox, the guy we decided we wanted to be because Gecko was too far from our reality....and Darryl Hannah, well the girl we would get at the end of our climb to the top (!)....if this movie didn't make you close your eyes and dream a little....check your pulse.
#2 Wall Street
(...ironically Wall Street 2 is perhaps the worst of all times )
Maybe because it was so recent and so relateable, I loved this movie, I could see it 100 times! The acting was superb, perhaps the most unlikely cast for a trading movie: Bale, Gosling, and Carrel...wtf?....but they nailed it. Bale is perfect as the socially awkward Burry; Gosling is hilarious, and Carrel's "Allen"esque performance is brilliant. The script is excellent, the directing was a gem. From a technical point of view, this film should be part of the curriculum of any serious college business program. The insight into the details of the 2008 crash is exquisite. Favorite All Time trading movie on my list:
#1 THE BIG SHORT
