Alright gang, it's time to get to work.. you probably won't see me for a few days, I'm off to the next major piece of integration into the currency scan and there is a lot to do. Will catch up with you all as soon as I can. - JP

Looks like a promissing and interesting tool, even if i can not really can read your diagrams by now, it looks interessting ... keep it up and the world informed :-)

I will eventually go into more detail on how to use the scan, how I use it, so it's more meaningful. Right now I don't want to jump into it, until everything I use is there. The fundamental models and the Machine Learning models all need to be integrated before I do that though. Plus, once the thing is done and completely automated I intend to explore some of the shorter-term trading opportunities. I spent about six months in 2014/2015 trading part of the scan as a stand alone 24 to 48 hour trade, it did better than I thought it might. I want to come back to that but not until this thing is finished.

Actually I'm going to agree with this on the broad stroke. I've encountered a lot of people over the years who were programmers first and tried to segue into trading and failed. Trading on the high end is no different than trading on the low end, you can't just do what everyone else is doing and expect to make money. Being able to model a derivative in c++ with an existing library or formula isn't going to make you rich, not if everyone is using the same thing. You have to be able to create, redefine, measure, improve and so on A HEAD OF THE COMPETITION...

My path to coding was different. I was a trader (professionally) for years before I ever scratched out a single lick of VBA. As I worked to not only try and remain profitable but also try to keep return correlations low to other methods (this is how you make yourself attractive as a money manager to hedge funds etc) coding became a necessity. When it takes you almost an hour to generate your forecast in excel for a single currency it's time to dive in. I now run substantially more complex formulas over many more pairs in a matter of seconds that also includes the data grab.

With the automation has also come flexibility. Instead of waiting around watching charts and running my spreadsheet, this entire thing sits out on an Amazon server and sends me a text message when something I'm looking for occurs. That means I get to walk my dog a lot more (lost over 80lbs doing that), eat out more, etc. etc. and miss a lot fewer opportunities.

I'm not saying anyone should do what I do, not in the style I trade or the degree to which I've pursued it, but this is my life and I take it serious. It's a passion I intend to fully explore because I enjoy it, and learning some programming became a natural progression and has had a huge impact on my quality of life as it has gotten me out from the screen. It's also something I can look on with pride. I'm an artist at heart and I look at the scan and the design and the colors and it's almost like a painting to me. It's an expression of my creativity and to be honest I'm pretty happy with. The fact that there are some here that also find in useful makes me feel pretty good.

As said in the previous post I hope to, once it's completed, to go into a little more detail about how I use it, some of the basis for it and to further explore some of the opportunities to trade different signals. - JP

Out of the blue, strange question, and it's a longshot, but did you retire fairly young as a CME local and move to AZ for the weather and more laid back lifestyle to trade off-floor in your younger years? Seem to remember a client digging into computerized TA at the time that had left Chicago to get out of the pits. Firm I was with had thousands of clients and several locals, but only one that I remember that specifically left Chicago to go to AZ specifically, and at such a young age comparatively to others. Not saying it was you, but your story/background kind of aligns. Don't have to answer out here.

I'll eventually move this response to the first page but I want it inline here so we can clear up the curiosity factor straight away. The Currency Scan - unless something major changes in my life and I'm forced onto a completely different path - will NEVER be available from ME as a subscription service. I have no intention of transitioning this thread from open to commercial at any time, ever. The only commercial activity I'd consider at this stage of my career is writing (educational content with basis and solid SEO structure, macro analysis and technical analysis), and to be honest I was just offered a really interesting position at a large broker (a good one), I'm just not sure the current structure is a good fit.

When the scan is complete and I've been able to finish automating everything to my liking I may in-fact send out some resume's and see if there are any firms that are interested in taking on an old-timer with a boat-load of insight, real-world experience and some unique analysis to help set themselves apart from the typical noise. At this point I'm just happy to be able to pull the trigger on the occasional trade when everything is lined up the way I want and focus on improving my modeling capabilities.

If that doesn't transpire, the work I do now may have value down the road when it comes time to retire fully. I own fxan.com, currencyscan.com and I'm hoping combined with this fully automated analytical piece I can sell out and add a few more pennies to the stack.

If the ONLY thing I ever accomplish with this work is the knowledge I gain from doing it and continued improvement in my insight and returns, I'll have no regrets. None. As stated before, the freedom this thing has allowed me is already worth the time and effort I've put into it. While many are glued to the screen waiting for opportunity, I'm usually glued to a book and a cup of Bengal Spice tea, adding to my knowledge. That my friends is priceless... - JP

Pip it's just shameless self promotion - kind of a "look what I can do" thing, hopefully when it's all said and done and I have a chance to fill in some of the holes, people find it useful. As noted above, when it's finished, I might go knock on some doors and see if there is interest in the analysis at the broker level. At this stage of the career I'd like to eventually transition into some content writing and market analysis. I'm also grinding closer to full retirement and I hope someday to sell the domains and the analysis and go buy a steak and a good bottle of bourbon with it.

I'm actually from PA so I'm not the guy, but I was all about the 9600 baud and waiting for my connection to Prodigy to take. Nothing told my parents I loved them quite like having the phone line at the house locked down for hours with a dial up connection (that was long distance...)
