the spread is the difference between the bid and ask, with the NDD model, they widen this spread more than it actually is, and this is all you pay the broker for each trade. once when you enter the market, and another time when you exit. so you pay the spread twice per trade. they don't have a comission.

with a ECN broker, the spread are untouched from what it originally is on the interbank market. but you will pay a comission, a small fee for each trade.
usually the comission is smaller than the wide spread you have to pay with NDD brokers. but there still is a spread but very small.

my current broker "Key to markets" spread on EURUSD is variable, it change constantly depending on liquidity, but it is untouched, around 0.3 for the most busy trading hours. this is very low and valuble if you are scalping, because each trade is costing you, and if you make many trades, the costs will rise fast..

but if you are only going to trade long term, or enter 1 or 2 trades a day, you shouldn't worry about the spread at all. then it is a very small cost.

Yes the commision is varied based on lot size. so if you trade very big which I dont think you are. then NDD might be cheaper for you depending if you make only a few trades.

but for small traders such as us, comission based ECN definitely is the best option.
also it is easyer to win with ECN because you are not so much down under directly after entry, with a NDD you are usually down 2-3 pips right away
another thing. you will never see a re-quote on either NDD or ECN. re-quotes brokers should be avoided at all costs because they trade the other side.
this creates a huge conflicts of interests.

it depends on broker, all ECN brokers have different comission and NDD brokers have different spreads. on KTM I pay 0.06 comission per micro lot and 0.3 spread on EU.
compare that to fxcms ndd
