I know IG have a CFD/futures contract or something on the ALSI.
If you follow this link http://www.ig.com/uk/indices-bet-details and select 'Asia Futures' (Seriously?! - In Africa?!) you can see their SAFEX feed.

It looks like standard bank offers trading in multiple products and offers accounts for non-residents. Here's a link to their page about it

Howzit Teddybomber!! And thanks for being a first contributor.
I simply opened a non-resident account with a large bank and moved funds into the account, which I then used to fund my trading account. Its actually dead easy and while its not as instant as we might be accustomed to here in Europe, its reliable. I would be happy to recommend my broker if anyone wants them, but please PM me as I don't want to promote one over another.

The bars colour on a combination of 2 MA's and 2 filters. If you'd like the numbers, please send me a PM?

Hi HP, thanks for the thread and your kind replies. I`m interested in trading the ALSI (or even ALMI), as its in my timezone, diversifying my Estx50 trading. But I couldn`t find any CFDs with the ZA brokers (DTW and PSG), but only futures (or single stock futures). With futures the contract size is rather high ( 46000 means 460000 ZAR?) and the margin requirement as well (8%). Or did I miss some info?

Don't know if this helps anybody but after an extensive search I eventually found a broker that offers the ALSI on MT4. They are called CM Trading.

@Forex37, don't know if this info will help you much. Spreads on CM Trading is "reasonable". I don't use them for actual trading. I intercept the BUY/SELL signals from my EA's and then place trades through IG where the spread is much better. I don't have the same flexibility with ProRealtime as I do with MT4 when it comes to strategy development

Hi Forex37,
You're welcome and I hope its generating some level of following, it really is a great little index. I may break off next week and spend some time on another 'boutique index' as I like to call them, as they all have their own way of delivering. For now lets get some more results from the ALSI. I am going to send you a PM in a moment about the broker itself, but your question has a general value so I shall answer it here:
The only CFD I am aware of is with IG, where their live spread (during the open) is around 8 pips + fills, which can be pretty wide. I tried it initially last year before I worked with an SA broker and kicking off a trade with a -30 just leaves too much work to be done and while I now have a statistical edge with my actual trades, in effect I pay about 3 pips using a local. Thats a big difference between the two!

The value you refer to is the margin and will differ from broker to broker, based on several factors. In the simplest terms, the actual index in this case (SAFEX) insist that a certain amount of cash is 'held' while you actually trade. Think of it like renting a car, they hold onto an excess so they are covered in the event of you driving like an idiot and putting a ding in the car. Same thing here. While the trade size is quite small, the margin is quite big, relative to many of the well-funded indices we see here in Europe.

The current minimum margin held on each contract (or 1 lot/the number of bits of index you want to trade with) is ZAR31,215. Or £1,726. However, while this may seem a fair bit, I am able to generate (as I did today) well in excess of 300 pips on the index. So, 300 x 1 lot = 300 lots profit. 1 lot is = ZAR10, so I made ZAR3,000+. In effect, I was able to generate about 10% of the value of the minimum margin, so while its expensive on the face of it, you are able to generate pretty sizeable returns on your account. Remember you would need just a little more than the minimum while you trade as the broker actually physically puts this on hold while you trade.

Can you confirm the time (in GMT) that you made that grab? If thats an 'in hours' spread thats around 11 'pips' which isn't bad at all to start?

I just took a look at their website and they appear to offer a round trip spread of ZAR40, or 4 pips. I am aware of better rates elsewhere with SA brokers but thats a pretty good start!

And I have one setup like my main method on the 1min.If spreads are decent I cant see why not.

If only HP was around but I guess its a bit early for the fairies up north

That screen grab was after hours (few minutes before I made the post). Usually the "in hours" spread is +- 20, but obviously they chop and change to their heart's content. There is another broker in the UK called GFT. They offer the ALSI through their own trading software with decent spreads. Catch is that it is 1GBP per point. So you better be sure your strategy works before you take trades with them.

Hey Rooi

I use only Renko charts for trading. I found that the ALSI is a bit too volatile for me when using time based charts. After I read one of HedgePiglet's previous posts regarding Range bars I am going to start experimenting with that now too.

Renko along with short/long EMA's provide good signals (for me )
