Hi M
it is not the dow jones per se but the 'fear factor' in the stock markets. It tends to move inversely to the stock markets. It is very predicable as well. Hence the reason to trade it

Thanks for putting that up Olu! I thought I had a pending long order at around the 4.45-4.50 level (can't quite remember) so I just went off to check my account and I have no position and no pending order, which saved me a good few hundred $. I guess I must have forgotten to change it to GTC. Phew!
Anyway, long from here.
There is a reasonable chance that they poke down to say 4.25-4.30, perhaps this week. That is a risk I'm willing to take. Below there, eeks, I guess I'm wrong.

Took 2/3 off my E/A short - profits just got too large to risk. Look to add some on a pullback higher if and when one presents itself.

IMHO gold is about to finish the pullback and the bearish trend is about to ressume. There is a possible H&S. (update, the GJ seems finally about making the break out to up-I personally almost forgot about it )

I think gold goes higher so I am long.
I think GBPJPY goes lower so I am short.

M - I wouldn't trade the dow atm but this is a measure of it's(the dows) volatility. Basically it's telling me that volatility is the lowest it's been for years so if you think volatilty will increase you buy the Vix. From a RR perspective the potential downside is limited to maybe 10% - the upside potential could be 50%+.

Yes but you can't buy the VIX. You can only buy the VIX futures (either directly or via the ETFs), unless you buy VIX calls or sell VIX puts. And although I haven't checked recently they (the futures) have been in contango for as long as I can remember, which makes longs especially difficult to make a profit from because the futures price is > the cash price and the futures price will converge with the cash price over time.

I know others think trading the VIX is easy but I think I've tried it once in my trading life and once was enough.

Yeah if A then B.
If somebody flies a plane into a tall building the VIX will rocket etc.
That's no good. You still need to know or have a reasonable handle on the probability of event A occurring.
