Transfer my metatrader templates to new pc help

Sounds simple enough, new pc, I transfered all my indicators across but when I go to find the saved templates of charts I created and saved within M4 I cant see the file names. It would really save a lot hassle or I'm going to have to set up all my charts again

You are probably looking in the wrong templates folder. There are 2 templates folders, one is a sub-folder in the experts folder.

Go to the other one, it will probably be ProgramFiles > Metatrader > templates.
It never gets easier, you just get better

Yes I was aware of that and checked the proper templates folder, just to make clear my problem, I can find template files which I have downloaded and added to M4, I just can't find the ones I saved and named myself in M4, I have even tried "show hidden folders" options via control panel, they just disappeared

Try copying the entire templates folder, then paste into MT4 and the replace existing one ?
It never gets easier, you just get better

Yes thats what I thought it would be that simple but my problem is the charts/ layouts I saved as templates within M4 don't appear anywhere in the templates folder so I cant see them to select and transfer across

Well after more googling I found solution although it has not helped me! It seems when you save a template its best to save it in any folder other than M4 - templates, so I saved one under My Documents and from there I can see the file. Really annoying why can t see the same files if saved under the M4 templates default folder I really don't understand why they dont apppear

I had much trouble also transferring templates. Try this.. When in metatrader, open onto a chart a template you want saved.. then right click, then save template, now save the template to desktop. From desktop you can save the file and transfer anywhere. This worked for me.

I assume all of the problems could be avoided by following one simple rule (expecially on windows-systems):

NEVER EVER INSTALL MT4 in the standard-folders (c:/programs/), choose another one, e.g. c:/mymt4plattforms/mt4_mybroker/
or having it installed in eg c:/mytempmt4/ (not starting mt4 after installation).
when installation is finished, you move the entire folder with all its subfolders to the desired final location and rename it, e.g. from "mytempmt4" to mt4_mybroker

Then you can save your templates in the standardfolder (mt4-dir/templates) and windows is not moving it somewhere else on your computer.

I personally have all my mt4's installed that way on an encrypted drive/etc. (maybe NSA will now everything , but if the computer gets lost or stolen, nobody is able to play around and burn my money ) ...

Right click a chart > go to templates > Load template > a window will open >

copy the directory address to windows explorer and it will take you straight to your templates

then email them all to yourself so you do not loose them, just a thought
