The Sunday newspaper has a front page article showing examples of how U.S. culture has been influenced by Latinos lately. For instance, tortillas now outsell hamburger and hot dog buns, and salsa outsells ketchup. In the sports section, our men's major league soccer team has made the playoffs, and the women’s team is getting ready for an exhibition game with Australia. A few years ago nobody I knew was interested in soccer (what the rest of the world calls football). But it’s been absorbed into our culture due to globalization and has plenty of rabid fans with painted faces now. So it works both ways.

LA Galaxy paid a lot of money to entice David Beckham. The presence of Beckham in the States probably helped raise the profile of football.

Starbucks never cracked Australia though. They made a big mistake by not researching their market properly. Closed most of their stores incurring a big loss.

As long as I can remember we’ve had a great exchange of music between Britain and America. In fact, we could probably add Canada and Australia to that list. Our musical styles seem to evolve together.

Yes, lots of athletes are coming here for football. That probably has helped the game become popular. I think basketball has the second most “imports”. But with that sport we also have quite a few “exports” to European leagues.


I hadn’t heard about Starbuck's misadventures. But there’s probably a good marketing lesson in there for others.
