He is right. There is nothing like a gap. That your broker is closed until 5pm eastern does not mean the markets are closed. By the way the Aud/Usd is currently at 0.9309. That is your 7 pip 'gap'

Usd/Jpy is down 50pips from Friday close

However, I agree that HSBC has more credibility and as such has a larger impact on price and market sentiment.
