{quote}thans your reply.I am a scalper using InteractiveBroker for years. I can say IB offer the best cross pairs spread, like EUR/CHF almost 0.5pip lower than ICM demo! IB pricing is shown as 0.5/1.0/1.5 not decimalised, but always gets filled with 0.1~0.2pips lower. As for E/U, after 45% commission rebate(actually charged $10/m), dukascopy maybe better for trading 1M larger size.

well, if you have the account size for ib, then probably better to stay with them. tbh, icm support isn't that great. i have not tried ib so i cannot comment on trading conditions, but icm administration isn't 100% professional. for example, the server upgrade should have been planned and traders should have been warned in advanced so any open trades can be closed to avoid money loss. also, i have contacted their support several times. while i just demo with icm, i've had several issues with their terminal.

right now, i have the problem the marketwatch window does not show the pairs. they are blanked out in a greyish brown. only can i see the pairs when i highlight a pair. other than that, i've had my other issues resolved. leading to what i've said about their support, they are a bit inefficient, almost like they have a standard set of response.

something like: terminal issue? ans: please re-install, payment problem? ans: please contact finance department ...etc

Hi everybody i was thinking of going with IC markets setting up a vps. I was wondering what the spreads are like during big news announcements? does it change much from the usual 0-0.3 spread? (i've got the demo on atm)

With Oanda i've seen the spread go up to 15 pips during announcements.

Thanks

This was a trade taken on May 23th at 2:57amET, just before the 3amET French Flash Manufacturing (and Services) PMI data release. The first picture is from IC Markets live ECN account, where I got stopped out on a 17.8pips spike. The second picture from another ECN broker also showed the spike, but the trade went on to make a win. The third picture from ForexFactory's TradeExplorer doesn't show the large spike but a lower candle only 11 pips in size at the "BUY" (Stop Loss) arrow, meaning I was stopped on spread. I think what you saw at Oanda with 15pips spread may be excessive, but it is quite normal to have large spikes on ECN brokers during news releases.

There are many threads that explained the pros and cons between ECN vs Market Maker type brokers. You may have to accept this fact as part of doing business.

thanks for the detailed reply mmaker. You're right that Ill have to accept the larger spreads during news releases(or stay away during releases) but if i can minimize it that would be great.

After i posted, I got an indicator running on both brokers now called spread_recorder.mq4 which records the spread each second onto a txt file. I've been keeping an eye on oanda and IC markets and it seem that IC markets does not fluctuate as much which is great.

{quote}Stupid question. Why not ask IC Markets directly and get the right answers?? They have email, phone line, Contact page, even Live Chat. Just ask them and get immediate answers, rather than ask a forum and WAITING for conflicting replies from strangers who may not even know the facts. If you bother to browse their website, they have account opening details and FAQ.

apparently it is possible with icm to trade microlots on an ecn platform. generally speaking, this is unlikely as many brokers don't allow trading in such size. they usually start at mini-lots to even standard lots depending on the brokerage.

Probably best to make two deposits. The first should be just $200, meeting the minimum account open specifications. You should do this as ICM does not offer any cTrader demos. Demo accounts can only be done on Metatrader for standard and TrueECN account.

However, I know that cTrader itself (standalone) supports microlots as I have demo-ed on them before by installing through Spotware's site. Deposit the minimum $200 just to test out execution and microlot trading. if you're fine with it, then deposit more. Just make sure on the $200, you up the leverage to maybe 400:1.

Oh, my bad, I must have imagined creating that IC Markets cTrader demo last month, and using it every day since. Let me check ...

Hmm, the icon's still there, it still opens and its definitely cTrader and IC Markets. Well, if you say it doesn't exist it must all be in my mind.

How about instead of just dismissing what I said, click on the link I provided above, look to the right of the page and you'll see a radio button to choose between creating a Live or a Demo cTrader account.

It's easy guys. Every broker usually uses "ct" subdomain infront of their normal domain if they offer cTrader.
I am very impressed with cTrader platform and their speed.

Especially like that the server is linked to London, which gives much(!) faster execution than to a NY server if you are around europe and not in the US.

So for ICmarkets it is

ct.icmarkets.com

or developer's site

ct.spotware.com

and so on.

You should definately try out cTrader platform if you are still with MT4, I'm using MT4 less and less (also don't like their new restrictions), am very impressed with cTrader so far, faster and more "pure".

For manual trading cTrader is far superior to MT4, not least because it only works with true ECN brokers. There's no way for a market maker to trade against you then screw with the price feed or play games with slippage and spreads to hit your stops. For automated trading its a bit different, there's a great programming language to develop them in, but very limited history for backtesting (which is also slow) and no optimization.

Hi,

I just opened a demo with IC Markets and using MT4. Is it true that they only provide ~1 to 2 days historical tick by tick data? or I am missing something. Maybe this agrees with what Slipshod said above.

Thanks.

the link you've provided gives a description of the cTrader ECN account. However, if you were to scroll to the very bottom, it only shows a button saying "Open a Live Account".

since i've only used icmarkets for the past little while, i would assume that you're probably an older user and icm removed the demo account service. why? who knows, probably because the cTrader account commission isn't a standard $7 rtl, but rather is unit based so it changes, which proves a bit disadvantage for exposing potential traders to this "hidden" cost.

You mean 9:13am BST (London Time). GMT time is 8:29am now.

Should be ok now. I closed and re-open the platform and now the missing bars and gaps are filled up on restart. I didn't measure the disconnect duration though.

You must be 'Chippy' at the other forum, and no I'm not 'muzzamcc' but you should apologize to him because you got the GMT time wrong.

Actually i didn't. It is currently 8:40am GMT time. So it's not possible for IC to have been disconnected since 9:13am GMT as the current GMT time is still only 8:40am. Google GMT time if you need to confirm the time.

Live trading with ICM for about a month, with a small account (~200EUR).

Had no problems so far. There is some small slippage during high volatility, but not only against me, so I guess everything is OK on that front. Execution is on par with the demo.

Opening the account and depositing was straight-forward and quick. (Once you get all the required docs.)
I didn't get to try withdrawals yet, but will comment here once that I get to that.
