on backtesting: I'm no expert myself but I stopped using startegy tester (neber much used it in fact)

My current backtest process:

I do not use MT4 Strategy Tester but have implemented my own small Test suit as an Indicator.
I call them: PseudoTrades

I run only rough tests: no tick data but Entry - and check if a bar hits SL or TP first.
In case the same Bar touches both I count such trade as skipped (unknown outcome)

I find this good enough and pretty fast.

Not sure about Daily: my highest tf I use is 1 hour but anyway this is what I do.

Advantage I see: I can print nicely results and statistic splited by year, month or weeks, plot only summaries or each single trade to logfile and also do some visual plotting like the picture.

Maybe it inspires someone else to do something outside of strategytester.

Some interesting info I found 6 or so month back:

1. INFO: MAX Historical Broker data (many do offer much less)

Please be aware that the MetaTrader 4 Server has the following limitations on history:

256 bars for MN1-charts

That is all the data that the server will store, and so is the maximum amount of data that it can provide to your client. There is no way for the MT4 server to provide more data than that. If you leave your client open, it can keep its own copy of history and thus exceed these limits.

There is a better/easier way to get the data from the server from your broker and that is:

Step 1: Open an M1 chart
Step 2: Go to History Center (press F2)
Step 3: Navigate to the currency pair and the "1 Minute (M1)" history data for the chart you have open in your terminal (be sure to "double click" the "1 Minute (M1)" selection in history center so it actually becomes the active selection)
Step 4: Then left click once on any of the data rows in the right hand window of the History Center (it doesn't matter which one)
Step 5: Click the "Edit" button, this pops up another window titled "Bar" and the default selection is on the "year"
Step 6: Push the down arrow on your keyboard until the year reads something silly like 1970
Step 7: Then select "OK"...this doesn't actually edit the data you selected but rather it creates a new bar with the timestamp and price info you just edited...don't worry about this as you will delete this fake bar in the end
Step 8: Now select "Close" in the History Center
Step 9: Navigate to your M1 chart of interest and then from the terminal menu select "Charts -> Refresh"...this will refresh the chart and attempts to fill any time gaps in the chart data (which now includes your year 1970 data point) with server data
Step 9 continued...Now your chart will have pulled anywhere from 2048 to 65536 M1 bars from your broker's server (not Metaquotes server) and is usually far more data than you can get the broker to cough up when you try and manually scroll your M1 chart back in time
Step 10: Go back to History Center (press F2) and navigate to your currency pair and its M1 data
Step 11: scroll down the data to the bottom of the list, your will see your 1970 candle there, click it once and then click the "Delete" button in the History Center window

Now you have really quickly downloaded all the broker's M1 data on your currency pair that the broker is going to let you have, much faster than holding down the home or pg-up key for minutes and minutes to download even less data. It works with charts of other timeframes as well.

Pull up a chart with only a 20 EMA and a 50 EMA, nothing else and watch how price reacts and respects these two EMA's for the past 10 years for as many pairs as possible.

Same can be said about Price Action and areas of support / resistance. The meaning will be the same and it will remain a bullish candle in the future...

Let's talk about Support & Resistance real quick. Areas of support / resistance exist because at some point in history, buyers and sellers took control.

PASR is a total method. It revolves around PRICE ACTION at SUPPORT and RESISTANCE.

It is not just PRICE bouncing off SUPPORT and going to RESISTANCE or vice versa. It is about WATCHING what PRICE does at these important PRICE levels.

Understand why these levels exist and why they are there. They are levels where, at some point in history, BUYERS and SELLERS took control. They are levels where the BUYERS and SELLERS, in their own right, support or cannot support PRICE.

These PRICE levels are created by supply and demand during certain economic conditions. Supply and demand changes with each economic and political situation. What was once a PRICE level in a certain economic scenario may not be important or supported in a different economic situation.

Supply and demand will drive PRICE to those levels which are supported by the current economic and political conditions. Usually, these are levels identified in history but occasionally, each condition creates its own PRICE level.

Certain currency pairs, and GBPUSD is one of them, have PRICE levels where round numbers are important. We have to know what these round numbers are and what PRICE does at these levels.

PASR at its simplest is PRICE bouncing from SUPPORT to RESISTANCE and vice versa. Unfortunately, that’s not a rule, just a condition.

PASR is also watching what PRICE does, and how it does it, at these levels.

PRICE always respects PRICE levels previously defined as SUPPORT and RESISTANCE. Read that again with correct understanding.

Price ALWAYS respects price levels previously defined as support and resistance.

Just because PRICE slices through support and resistance doesn’t mean PRICE doesn’t respect that level. It DOES respect that PRICE – it just means that, at that point in time, it is not as important. The supply and demand conditions have changed such that the BUYERS and SELLERS are moving to different levels.

So, PRICE breaking through SUPPORT and RESISTANCE tells us as much as PRICE bouncing off SUPPORT and RESISTANCE.

However. it is not as simple as price breaking through a level and going to the next PRICE level. There are many factors to consider.

How did PRICE break through the level? The most important and significant question is, Where did PRICE close? Did it close above or below the level? Was it just a spike through the level?

What was the market sentiment when PRICE broke through the level? Was the bar just an average range bar or was it a bigger range bar? What were the bars before it – average or bigger?

Where is the next PRICE level?


USD/JPY

Now take a look at the USD/JPY monthly chart. You can see that in 1999 price moved down to the 101ish area and it proved to be strong support. Price moved back up and didn't test that area again for another 5 years! However, those who paid attention to the past knew that this was a solid area of support and price moved up another 2,500 pips or so. Now look at where we are at right now at this point in time, interesting, we are back at the 101ish area... Might be wise to keep an eye on this level due to it being such a significant area of support / resistance and as we know from the PAST that areas of support / resistance exist because at some point in history, buyers and sellers took control.

You might want to reconsider your bias in regards to the past not meaning anything because in FOREX it plays a major role in my decision making, but again, I am a swing trader and I need to rely on these types of factors. If you are scalping or are an intraday trader then this will probably mean nothing to you and you can completely disregard everything in this post.

This post was in no way supposed to offend you but I wanted to show my side in regards to your post because I noticed you posted this earlier in the thread and I think it is completely false and a little naive to think that the past is meaningless when it comes to trading FOREX. I take my business seriously because this is what pays my bills and this is how I am able to provide for my family and build for my future so I spend a portion of the weekend to prepare for the following week of business. Second - I trade for a living as you do

Third - I still say back testing is a waste of time you will never change me on that

Fourth - you got me trading fx on a longer term as I do equities so thank you

Fifth - great thread keeping it going

As I mentioned before I will be able to do much more extensive testing when I convert this to the Zorro platform, but I thought I would go ahead and show an optimization report and results for back testing one pair, EURJPY, for 2011 to 05/09.

2011 was not a good year as this did not really get into any profit until the very end of December, when many might not want to trade anyways. This test was by no means complete, but it gives a picture.

It won't allow me to upload the whole Strategy tester report but if anyone wants it just PM me

No--I hard coded the EA to look at the Daily for trend (the EMA's) and take trades on the hourly. You can add it to any timeframe and it will trade the same

Hey Dewey,

Thanks for the EA's. I put them on the recommended pairs. Seemed to open up positions on pairs that aren't showing an entry on the Williams.

Interesting... my EA opened up three JPY trades toward the end of Friday's trading session (I had just turned my EA on a few hours prior):

CHFJPY
EURJPY
GBPJPY

All were buys, and all are in profit on the first position. I noticed looking back at the charts that the WPR dipped down below -80 briefly at the time, which is what triggered the trades. The WPR ended up closing much higher, but according to the trading rules, they were legitimate trades:

From Page 1: "2) New positions are opened up using H1 Williams % Indicator when price is Over Bought / Over Sold. We do not need to wait for H1 to close in OB or OS area. Once price moves into OB / OS area then 1 position opens up."

I closed the first few trades in order to link the account to forex factory trade explorer as I needed closed trades in order to aggregate the data.

As for EUR/NZD trades I am thinking that this could be the spread which is HUGE!

Gold, Silver, and DOW pips are different so I needed to try a few different numbers.

**At this point though everything is set and ready to go. Forward test will remain active for the foreseeable future. As previously stated though I will look to disable the EA as I see fit in order to cut unnecessary losses.
