god help you when the "travelling community" pay a visit - high risk / high reward though - they would never pay you for their Guinness after the first pour though ( which always made things quicker behind the bar ) - only after the job was done

we couldn't possibly do beer in 1/2 litre cans - that would be way too European - let's just pick a random number which is fairly close
1 pint would be better and far more British , but there's probably a law which states that the size must also be printed in metric and some marketing whizz worked out that putting 568ml on a can would makes peoples head explode
or something like that

High risk/high reward is right! Did you ever do a wedding? I think I literally grew pubic hair (became a man) overnight when I witnessed two "families" get wed in a small hotel. Times were tight. He took the money (risk)...the joint went up. Everything but burned to the ground! I was a pot-wolliper (dish washer) at the time. I called my mom in tears...I need to come home now!
Those "Wild West" saloon scenes? lightweights...2.1% 440! In fairness... They came in the following day and peeled off cash for everything that was broken. CASH!

worked in Forte Posthouse up in Notts - 600 seater banquet hall - 1 or 2 traveller weddings a year
they enter the hotel together - within a matter of minutes there's a bunch of young lassies in the staff canteen - demanding to know the price of everything in there - " sorry , it's a staff canteen " yeah , but - how much for the cake?
sorry , it's not for sale - your food is nearly ready in the banquet hall ...
They go in - speeches and stuff - 5 of us behind the bar - a true calm before the storm moment.One of the guys I'm with asks me if I'm ready.And he's a tough-nut Sikh from the Midlands with a neck like Mike Tyson's ...
After almost an hour - 5 lads come crashing through the doors from the hall - one has a black eye - the other 4 rip the shirt off his back - all the way down to his vest - he spends the rest of the night with the torn shreds hanging from his trousers - and they all start laughing and singing - I'm guessing he's the groom
no sommeliers working that night - go figure
When the food was served - the traveller women forcibly stop the service team at the doors from the kitchen from serving the food , instead - ripping it out of their hands and taking it to their men - as soon as they all get their dinner - they sit anywhere and everywhere except the tables prepared for them. There's an entire roast dinner between the cushions af a leather chesterfield - ah well - Fok it.
As the night goes on - the women compete with one another in the game of "see how many half pints of lager I can fit onto a tray at once" - to take back to the brood - "20 halves of Kronenbourg - no feck it! Tirty!!" Excuse me madam? " I said fokkin Tirty , Tirty halves of Kronenbourg ( 300% speed ) - the woman next to her orders 35 - the first woman boils with rage
What we normally used for empty bottles to take to the recycling skip - the large bottle bins on wheels - thay had filled with ice and bottles of beer.About 10 of them. One of the older guys who is obviously mental spends most of the night trying to dive head first into them ...
There's a guy at the bar with curly red hair , open shirt - the biggest crucifix you've seen in your life ( around someone's neck at least ) gently swaying. He falls flat on his face , with no attempt to break his own fall ... then he does it again.... completely deadpan
A huge mess - but man , what an experience.
