Since things are quiet here, thought I'd post an ECN tick view of the hour running up to FOMC.

The only interesting thing is the footprint of some robot standing on the bid (from :07 to :12 and again from :33 to :38). Evidently some dealer wanted to get net EUR long into the announcement.

The times are US-CT.

One last view of the FOMC: the +/- 15m around the announcement. About as orderly as it could be; no shenanigans in spreads, good size all the time, and all the earmarks of a market that concluded after 10 minutes or so that the latest addition to Uncle Ben's Fairy Tales was a half a USD cent higher in EUR.

Yes, but the dealers' algol's signature is to cycle the side they're interested in a half pip in a 5 sec or less cycle. That causes the retail houses quotes to twitch a little as their machines follow the inside spreads, and that attracts volume.

That's what made me say those two periods are pretty typical of that.

You know, one of the things the dealers have on the FX market is that no body can really do the kind of high-freq forensics as can be done in stocks.

Any feed you see has both elements of immediate dealer behavior, but also matching behavior one feed to another. The dealers almost never give the same quote to all the feeds they contract to, not for sinister reasons, necessarily, but just because of different contract's requirements.

All in all, though, that's good for us. Otherwise, there'd be the kind of shenanigans that the HF's put into the equities, and while they can break the NYSE or NASDAQ and it's not going to matter that much, they better not break the FX market's microstructure, or all he11 could break loose.

The point of what I just wrote was: I don't think it is. You have to do it by machine, and the software resources and data costs you incur are way better spent doing something else, and then what you end with anyway isn't all that reliable.

I only look at forensics around announcements to decide which ones need special handling.

FOMC is one that doesn't, because the banks all have a pretty good idea of what's going to be said (I don't mean leak, but who owns the Fed, after all?), and as long as their books are set up right, the move is going to be orderly. And that's all that matters.
