I come to find out that the repository Java is Generic with Linux Ubuntu etc. at lesat the main respository that comes with these OS versions. Basically it appears that as Linux is an open source the open source guru'z created their own java version dirivatives. So the Origianl Oracle Java was evaded. That is good for general Java like environments that the average person would use on a Linux platform however in the trading world where we have the "it Don't work scenario". I had communicated with Oanda on this 4 times and got the bubble gum machine responses.

Here on this forum is where I got the detail and direction to fix this time wasteful issue of simple getting Fxtrade to open in Linux. I was able to get rid of the generic javaz and Icetea plugs in Mint 9 and install Oracle JRE7u5. Fxtrade works fine as a webpage login with Firefox. But still won't work as a desktop or thru Opera. That seems good enough to suffice the effort of getting Fxtrade to work in Linux. I now question the intergrity of Oanda regarding anything NON-Windows based as a far a support go's.

I hope that Oanda tightens up the behind the scenes efforts as they continue to dress up their website. Implementing a Flash version of Fxtrade would be a great alternative to the Java biased Fxtrade as it stands now.

Thanks for all the helpul posts here regarding the Java Linux situation.

Looks like Oanda will stop full weekend trading; got this email today:

Dear Mr. Larkin,

OANDA will adjust its operating policy indefinitely to bring trading hours in line with industry standards. Beginning this Friday, July 6, 2012, our weekly trading session will close on Friday afternoons at 4:00 PM EDT and reopen Sunday afternoons at approximately 3:00 PM EDT.

OANDA was the sole forex provider to offer weekend trading, and did so as a client service despite the fact that global forex markets do not operate on Saturdays and Sundays. Regular weekday trading will not be impacted by this alteration to OANDA's operating hours.

"Maintaining a market when the international currency markets are closed represents a significant challenge," noted OANDA's Chief Technology Officer, Tony Savor. "In the absence of live market data, OANDA could still offer a price for each currency pair, but with no active market in which to hedge customer trades, OANDA was forced to take on greater risk. To mitigate this risk, it was necessary to increase spreads but this was deemed to be at odds with OANDA's objective of keeping client costs as low as possible. Our commitment to providing low spreads was a major consideration in this decision."

"We understand that for some, this change in trading hours will be an inconvenience," said OANDA CEO K Duker, "but when we compare the risk weekend trading represents with the very low volumes actually traded, the obvious conclusion is to suspend trading during non-market hours. This will also enable OANDA to concentrate additional resources on accommodating the needs of our clients during regular market hours, when the vast majority of our clients depend on OANDA to provide a fair and efficient market in which to trade."

We appreciate your business. Please contact OANDA customer service with any questions you may have.

Sincerely,

OANDA Canada

I never made much use of weekend trading, and they are still opening much earlier than most brokers (3pm instead of 5pm on Sunday,) but it strikes me that this change might be a sign of more to come. Not saying that in a bad way, just that they've done more drastic things like this since buddy took over from the founder.

Interesting.

Interesting indeed.

Where are the Oandian weekend trading advocates now?

Good call though, Oanda. You should indeed focus less on trying to be somehow "special" in ways that are barely useful to clients, and focus more on providing a more competitive offering spreads/execution/leverage wise, which is more important. E.g. I'd work on improving news-time spreads, I'd stop being so stubborn with the 50:1 leverage thing and go for providing 100:1 in the non-US branches, and so on.

Platform wise, added functionality to FXTrade, especially some kind of free API/scripting/programming environment would be great.

You can thank me later.

LOL.. have you seen IIROC leverage here in Canada?

http://fxtrade.oanda.ca/help/policie...n-requirements

It goes on a per-pair basis and is really low leverage in some cases.

(They go by %. 3%, for example, is 33:1 leverage. 2% == 50:1 leverage.)

This isn't Oanda's doing, this is just IIROC.

Personally, I don't use much myself with them, even with scalping... so it's never really gotten in my way. I just find the whole thing funny.

Plus, it's always amusing when I hear rookies complain about not getting more than 50:1 leverage and how they "can't be profitable" with such rules by the CFTC/NFA... I do well with much less leverage through IIROC regulations and the limit doesn't bother me in the least.

If you can't be consistently profitable with low leverage, higher leverage just means you'll lost money faster.

(not saying you're wrong for wanting 100:1... just rambling I suppose.)

And if you can be consistently profitable with low leverage, being stuck with low leverage just means you have to get high capital to make winnings worthwhile. I can use your argument to limit you to 1:1 leverage, it doesn't make 1:1 leverage good.

I get your point though.

Thing is, they've always limited their clients' leverage to 50:1 even when it was legal to provide more in the US. Today, I believe they have a European branch where they can legally provide 100:1, but they still stick with the 50:1. It has nothing to do with the regulations, in fact when those regulations came they were happy (in a "See? We were right" way).

This is right call from Oanda, they are market maker and apparently have a big loss from this "weekend trading" recently, EU summit e.g. As I said, brokers should be profitable otherwise they will be eliminated. We can't expect brokers offer decent service if they are barely making money or lose money.

How is 4PM EDT the industry standard? I only know of one other broker who closes at that time (early). AFAIK industry standard is 5PM on Fridays (when the futures markets close). Am I wrong?

Unfortunately, there was a miscommunication in the initial notification.

Indeed, OANDA's weekly trading session will close Fridays at 5 pm, local New York time. However, it is advisable to review positions prior to the close each Friday in order to prepare for the start of the new trading session the following Sunday afternoon.

Please feel free to post here with any further questions regarding this issue, or anything else OANDA-related. We'll be able to provide further insight and support on everything fxTrade.

What about the policy of widening spreads by a ridiculous amount 2 hours prior to the close on fridays?

I opened up a demo account with OANDA the other day because so many people had told me that they used them. I have used a number of sites before but never struggled so hard to actually get into a demo account and place a trade. I found their Java platform and website quite archaic and really difficult to use. Anyone else have the same experience?

Why are you complaining you are lucky they still leave your post here.

In my case if I post something against a broker FF delete it immediately. It happens in the MB thread , here and pretty much everywhere else.

FF is payed by the brokers adds so you can figure where their loyalties are.

Not in my experience to be honest. (and I gave some brökers hell here. lol)

Posts get removed when members report them. Just cut back a little on the useless ranting/swearing. I.e attack the broker without breaking forum rules and try to be helpful to readers (objectively explain what the problem is with the bröker instead of just complaining).
