A fully automated EA most certainly can be profitable and is not guaranteed to fail. Yep, they are out there, churning out profits every single day.

However, I can think of 3 basic reasons why most hands-free EAs (automated trading) will not be successful in the long run:

1) Programming errors

2) The EA is based on a strategy that is not profitable

3) The EA does not accurately encapsulate all strategy rules....
You are off zznbrm. Maybe some hiccups to 8 but this is still clearly in the 5-6 range, with alot of 3 peppered in. It is all about the journey though.

But seriously I think everyone has good points and is correct in their assessment of EA potential. Just depends on perspective. Unfortunately I usually find myself in the crodzilla perspective. I think I just keep at them until they break. Too much the skeptic.

Even if you "create a codable list of rules and then create a mechanism to accurately encapsulate those rules". I guarantee if you try to apply it across every instrument over decades of data, you will find it is a wash at best. At some point to be successful you need a discretionary leap to apply it to a specific instrument at this present time and you need to be right in that discretionary decision. No different than any other type of trading. Just depends on the psychology of the trader.

Sure people have rules that are successful for years. That is not forever though. Or just as legitimately like maybe Viv108 is saying you could decide that today is a ranging day but you need to go to your day job so you need an EA that can take advantage of what you think is going to happen. Neither one of these perspective is necessarily wrong.

I'm not too good with EAs yet. I agree that expecting a fully automated EA to make you rich is a pipe dream (unless you are the author of the EA ).

But... I think an excellent use of EAs is to codify the rules so it can tell you when all the criteria are met. This can help to keep you from missing entry signals, entering too early (itchy trigger finger syndrome), etc. You still have to use discretion, but at least you remove all discretion from whether an entry meets all the rules.
