The current situations
One of the big stories to come out this week is the deal made on extending the payroll tax cut in the United States. This keeps in place the previous cuts that moved the employee's share of the payroll tax from 6.2% down to 4.2%. This will not likely be a major additional boost for the US economy since the cuts have already been in place and are only being renewed. But, it will prevent a slowing of spending that would slow down an already fragile economy. Considering the amount of political deadlock taking place earlier in the week, the payroll tax cut extension will be welcome news to traders betting on a stronger Dollar.

Well, the more I read of the apparent bailout, the more lies and deceit I see, and I do not feel inclined to share the, in my opinion, overly optimistic assumptions about future growth in the Greek economy. I mean, come on, let's face it, there is no way any investor is going to risk money in Greece.

Say what you will about Greek tax avoidance; those bastards in Brussels have just usurped a nation, and least we forget, they recently passed a law giving all decision-makers in Brussels immunity from prosecution – as well as a 200k salary. Do I think the Greeks will pay more taxes, do I hell. This bailout has just guaranteed a surge in the black economy, if for no reason other than for the average Greek to survive.

As mentioned earlier today, I am not sure how the markets are taking this news, and so I have taken profits, and moved stops to BE. May take another bite if EU breaches the resistance up at the 1.33 level. Likewise, UC is being supported rather fiercely around the 0.9100 level.

Well it turns out you were right to do so, so far. I must have gilded the lily a bit. Very disappointing PA..

Bit of a mixed mood today for me, as I see the demise of a nation, set against the first signs of Spring here in my little part of this crumbling world.

I mentioned in a comment to a news announcement on FF earlier today that I was reading a study by a renowned Elliott Wave analyst, who concluded that a rather severe depression will hit in 2016 – that’s if that asteroid that the Mayans were looking at a few millennia ago does not strike this December and spare us all the agony of slipping down into penury.

With this depression in mind, we could well be seeing the beginnings of it as the political masters in Europe, and the US, do all possible to avert such a drain on any potential grand plans that they may harbour. Of course, one could say that whatever these cretins touch turns to the proverbial, as was pretty much surmised today by Fitch:

‘Fitch considers that the proposal to reduce Greece's public debt burden via a debt exchange with private creditors will, if completed, constitute a rating default, and result in the country's IDR being lowered to 'Restricted Default' ('RD') upon completion. The ratings of GGBs affected by the exchange, including those not tendered but restructured under CACs, which are expected to be imposed retrospectively on bonds issued under Greek law, will also be lowered to 'D' ('default') at this time.’

Well, I could write elegant prose interjected with critical diatribe, or discuss the power play that seems to be unfurling between Largarde and Merkel – Fitch can see that the private swaps due March 10th will transpire into a selective default – whereby Largarde is trying to push Merkel to agree to a 750 Billion Euro firewall funded by Europe, whilst only committing the IMF to a measly 13 Billion Euro incentive.

From this I could fall into the trap of trying to make sense of the CDCs, bond maturities, etcetera, but to be honest, the rules are changing so fast, it’s difficult to do so.

And so I take the tie off, park my German engineering into the woodshed, and revert to a mind-set held since the late eighties/early nineties.

Hey, I may need to rediscover this aggression if the PIIGS start to fall as many a seasoned analyst has suggested.

The kid looks fun to watch, however, my preference is for the top to visit.
