Like the USA? And quite within their rights to do this. Given that Greece chose to join the EEC and its flawed central finance controls, they should now be given the opportunity to leave - Oh, wait, didn't they already decide not to? If Germany feels that a member state is spending more than it is making then it has a right to say so. It's a shame that other members are not as vocal in this in completing the financial integration which is so vital to the future of the EEC. Given the history of the last century I think its our only hope of going forward.

zerohedge's commentary, as usual, represents the worst of the USA's foreign policy opinion. A selfish and scared look across the Atlantic at a union of 800 million people, or at least in excess of 300 million, whichever way you want to count it, who could conceivably become a world power of some sort. Imagine what an economic bloc like that could achieve. Rather than enslaving people with debt, as zerohedge postulates, it could give nations economic security and open markets in which to trade. zerohedge should remember - coming from a country whose flag represents the 13 states who fought for their own economic union against their British oppressors

It suits some people's agenda to call history bunk but if we don't learn from it then we will continue to make the same mistakes over again and with nuclear weapons proliferating this is not an option.

As a postscript:

This is a disgusting thing to say. Shame on you Tyler Durden.

And Tyler, a question. Would central government allow a US state independence if they requested it? I doubt it. But the people of Greece do have this option (of leaving the EEC).

.........If the people of Greece leave the euro what are they going to do with their own currency, smikester, and not to mention that the germans will do all in thier power to isolate them in all posible manner, afte all they left the union and that like you say is untolerable, as if a state of the union here will leave the united states, well Utah is in the process at least they started with having thier own currency, gold..........

Thanks for the link Carlos, that is interesting. If Greece chose to leave the EEC (instead of people just rioting...) then I agree it would be extremely painful, but there is no blame here on Germany, France, Greece or any of the other members. The financial system is flawed. That's it.

Reasonable points to consider, Smikster, and well put, I might add.

That said, the option for the Greek people (who are not without their faults in terms of tax evasion, short working weeks and so on) to decided was recently taken away from them and the man who posited the notion of a vote of staying in the EU - the Prime Minister - was quickly shuffled off stage and replaced by a technocrat. No coverage in MSM of the misery currently sweeping the streets of Greece. Of course, one could argue that the main population, like voters, do not really know what they are voting for; but nonetheless, they have been denied the option. Much like they were denied the option of not joining the Euro - in all reality.

And then we have the refusal by the EU elite to accept national referenda - French, Dutch, Irish etcetera- and now have a situation whereby those in Brussels are immune from legal proceedings against them, a turn of events that was, of course, ratified by them and not put to the people for sanction.

System stinks.

I agree 100% that the system is flawed just as in here but the questions is will the feds allow it, will europe central bank allow it? I.m sure here they are doing all in their power to make Utah project fail, who will prevail, I don't know, but civil war could errup from this easily, me think, hope not but.......
