Kind of frustrated as an Oanda customer in that my carry trade account does not see an increase in interest payout despite rate increases by central banks. Seems unfair and also seems like blatant and unscrupulous br0ker action. The most recent interest rate increase was on the Hungarian Forint from 6.0% to 6.5%. Prior to that it was the Turkish Lira. Funny thing about it was the br0ker changed the spread in a way where the payout remained unchanged, but interest charged on sell positions increased. Equally frustrating is Oanda's inability to answer any questions with regards to this. This is what they had to say when I contacted them via live chat...

It would be interesting to see if other brokers are providing better swap rates than Oanda does (they could hardly be worse) on these exotics. It would be REALLY interesting to figure out a way to arb them, which is what keeps different markets from getting too out of line with each other.

Hi all,

Anyone got stopped out on that 8:37 EST move? What was the slippage like? I have an account at both MBT and Oanda. Just got hit with quite high slippage at MB trading. Would like to know what the case is with Oanda.
what % of your margin balance do you have to have before OANDA liquidates your position?

A margin close out occurs when your NAV (Net Asset Value) is equal to half of your Margin Used, if you use a risk ratio of 50:1

Example:
Balance=1000$
You enter a position of $50000
That means that you have used all your balance to enter that position.
That also means that a Margin Close Out will occur when your NAV = $500
I am not exactly sure what is the value of 1 pip, but if 1pip=$1 and the market moves 500pips against you, a Margin Close Out will occur and your position will be closed automatically leaving you with $500 in your account.

So, depending on your Leverage, it might be 50%, 60%....
Can someone give me info on the amount of data the fxtrade oanda app uses? (iphone/droid)

I am thinking of switching plans to Sprint as they are the last to offer unlimited dataplans but am not sure if this is the correct move. I would like to have the app on constantly while at work for 8 hours, therefore it seems an unlimited dataplan would be ideal/necessary. If anyone could comment on sprint this would be appreciated as well.

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread, etc.

PS: I only need to look at a 5 minute chart/quotes for the EUR/USD, and then be able to buy/sell (don't know if this affects the amount of data, etc.)

Even if u use the oanda app all day long the data usage will be below 1 GB per month.

So there is really nothing to worry about any limits in volume.

btw: the charts arent very useful with oandas app. the timeframe they offer to use if very limited, u cant scroll back, they did a bad job.

just the trading is ok, i can enter trades in seconds.

A similar question was posted on the OANDA forum. Here is a quote from the Mobile Product Manager:

I'm only running demos, it certainly is less accurate than other demos (less frequent price changes) so I would stay away from real for the time being.
Here's a transcript of my chat with an Oanda Rep. Seriously, you need an expert to decipher what the agent is saying.

First, they reckon I cannot transfer the funds on my own from Oanda US (Corporate Account) to Oanda Asia Pacific account.

When I ask why I cannot? I get the answer that yes I can. That I could withdraw all the funds and deposit it into an Asia Pacific Account.

Trying to clarify the discussion I ask the same question again. Then I get a response which confuses me even more.

The reason why I wanted to migrate is because with Oanda US you cannot trade gold/silver without leverage. Also you cannot hedge your position. Can hedging be done with Oanda Asia Pacific i wonder? This FIFO rule is also driving me crazy. Can some one point me in the direction where I could find more info on this matter?

I think the time has come to move on to another broker.

vasmiza, that chat just broke my brain. I didn't really understand why you even need to migrate if it is less convenient as just withdrawing funds by yourself? Are there some benefits?

Oanda US (or OAnda Corporate as they call it):

 

  1. Cannot hedge positions
  2. Stupid FIFO rules
  3. Cannot trade Gold/Silver on leverage

I thought with migration that you can keep your open positions. That seems to be the only benefit. i don't see the reason to go through with this hassle for any other reason.


Apparently you cannot operate 2 Oanda accounts at the same time, thus it is necessary to migrate if you want to operate from Oanda OAP (or Oanda Sinagpore as they call it).

We'll I'm just going to see if I can just withdraw the funds myself and deposit it into this new account. Lets see how rigid they are with the rule of not being able to operate 2 Oanda accounts simultaneously .

I don't know..... this whole thing is confusing me. Seriously I might just pull out all my money and go with FXCM. I need to concentrate on my trading not this nonsense.

Oanda's live chat is absolutely useless. They are people who have no idea what they are talking about and just have generic answers. For example, any technical problem you have is answered by 'clear your java log'. This is rarely the problem but this is about the far as any live chat rep has got me on any problems I have encountered. You will have much better luck if you send a very detailed email to frontdesk.

In my opinion, Oanda are the best broker out there by a mile unless you have 50k+ to deposit in which case there are arguably better deals (CFH and LCG to name a couple). Lmax seem ok too but no experience with these guys. I would suggest giving oanda a chance but obviously totally your decision

Thnks for the advice. I tried calling today but couldn't get through. I will try emailing in detail and see what happens.
