Well, if you use a market maker, and, say, you go short at his bid, then he can do a couple of different things, right?

One, if he has the order flow, he can match that at his offer to a customer long that comes in. If the market hasn't moved, then he pockets his bid ask spread.

Two, he can lay it off by selling it to his prime broker. As long as the PB's bid is inside of his (which most religiously keep up at all times), he earns the "inside spread difference."

So now, on this spike down, he follows it with his bid ask spread, you hit his offer close to the bottom, and, (a) if IB's graph really reflects their not having that paint, and (b) if IB were his PB, then his computer goes to buy it from IB Fix Gateway, and they're offering a 100 pips up just then. Kaboom.
