...I understand your anger and I must admit that you have been one of the few (the only one) that consistently have say it out loud (since I remember in FF) . Well there are so many things that they don't make rational sense in the world economy that its hard to pinpoint this as a unique case.

From a strictly rational and economics point view you are 100% right and I even dare to say that the markets should cut the crap with the US (and all other) too before is too late with the irrational deficits and macroeconomic mismanagements (e.g printing money beyond monetary policy justification) that can put the whole world back to medieval ages if they burst....

i kinda remember that all was fine... party hats were on. socker moms were driving their 45k suv to the games. and at 4:51 sec into this referring to 2007... Ben says the word "crises". all prier to bear and the 2008 crash.. what did he know when he slipped with the word "crises? " what did they all know?

To be fair to Bernanke, he refers to the final quarter of 2007, at which point the crisis in interbank liquidity was firmly underway. Remember the ECB's huge liquidity injection at the start of August that year, due to frozen money markets? This gunshot, for many, signaled the start of the crisis.

It goes without saying that the causes predate this event...

its not a fair or unfair issue. its who knew what when. when stock markets were at their highest because your house doubled in price. it was bs... they just made your dollar worth less. just as it was bs for the 1.6 euro.. a slide of hand to fool sheep.

All the information, warning signals, were out there for all to see in August 2007, prior to the Q4 to which Bernanke refers: the freezing of money markets; ballooning TED spread; dysfunctional LIBOR; Northern Rock blowing up in the UK etc.... Actually, HSBC, in very public fashion, flagged up the problems with sub-prime mortgages in Feb 2007, which caused a sharp, albeit temporary, sell-off in equities.

The stock markets reached their highest, as you say, mainly due to the Fed embarking on a rate-cutting cycle in the fall of 2007. Investors foolishly believed this would solve the crisis (don't bet against the Fed and all that) and business-as-usual would resume...
