Greek PM To Tell Merkel, Sarkozy Of Commitment To Reform


ATHENS -- Prime Minister George Papandreou will tell German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy of Greece's commitment to downsize its public sector and press ahead with a new property tax to meet its budget targets, a Greek official said ahead of a three-way conference call Wednesday.

Government spokesman Elias Mossialos told reporters that Papandreou will also ask his German and French counterparts to quickly implement the decisions of a July 21 European summit granting new powers to Europe's temporary bailout fund.

The conference call among the three leaders is expected to take place Wednesday at 1650 GMT, and follows a week of frantic meetings in the Greek government to step up its reform drive.

"The Prime Minister will inform them on the decisions of the two recent cabinet meetings and tell them of the determination of the Greek government to implement these decisions," Mossialos said.

Under pressure from its European partners, Greece's cabinet decided last Tuesday to step up structural reforms, including a plan to drastically slim down the public sector and sharply cut civil service wage benefits.

That meeting was followed by a separate cabinet decision Sunday to implement a new property tax in order to cover a EUR2 billion shortfall in Greece's deficit targets for this year.

"They will talk about developments in the euro zone, and Papandreou will raise the issue of the immediate implementation of the July 21 decisions and will also raise the issue of further development opportunities for the euro zone," Mossialos added.
