Yeah...its not getting older that bothers me. Its the fact that my choices are getting fewer and fewer by the day. I find it terribly annoying, and rather cruel, that as one's mind expands with age (to a point), there are less things to think about because other people ("they"?) have already made the decisions for you.

More than the populist in me loves people, the libertarian hates the self-righteous and tight-assed. If there is a good God, (or even Karma) they all get their come-uppances, one at a time. Well, this is what I was most concerned about:

Lady Liberty not in danger from Irene
The Statue of Liberty is not vulnerable to a storm surge, since the good lady stands atop a 65-foot high foundation and 89-foot high granite pedestal. However, the 305' height of the lady's torch above the foundation means the statue will experience winds a full Saffir-Simpson category higher than winds at the surface. The statue is rated to survive a wind load of 58 psf, which is roughly equivalent to 120 mph winds (Category 3 hurricane). However, a mid-strength Category 2 hurricane with 105 mph winds will be able to generate 120 mph winds at a height of 300 feet, and would theoretically be capable of toppling the Statue of Liberty. Winds from Irene should stay below 80 mph at 300 feet, and not pose a threat to the Statue of Liberty.

But with the models forecasting surge within 6 inches of topping the flood walls on the south end of the island, it's going to be interesting, with LON on holiday, to see what kind of trading day can be hobbled together on Monday. Depending on when they get the power/trains back on, people might not be able to get to work.

Also looks like the Jersey Shore, with 15-20 ft waves on top of 6 feet of surge, could get whacked pretty bad. That's probably enough to threaten some of the boardwalks.

EDIT: Yep. Google Earth puts, e.g., the Point Pleasant Beach boardwalk at 14 ft. Lots of houses front doors go right out onto that boardwalk. Hmm.

Y, but may have to evacuate to my parents place with food.
