He didn't quit Apple... he is now the chairman. Looks like his illness is getting on top of him and he can't do his duties as CEO anymore. It will no doubt open lower but he will still put his oar in as chairman!

To be honest, Apple can't put a foot wrong. Rumours of a 'cheaper' iPhone to tackle the mid-range market and no other competitors coming even close to the iPad with a retina display iPad 3 coming out in early 2012, it seems they have cornered that market too!

I won't go into a discussion as to which is better, Apple iOS, Google Honeycomb or WinMob 7. It is horses for courses. Apple just marry the hardware, software and content really well together because they have it all under their control!

Also with a premium price on their products, their margins are massive and they are raking it in. Huge cashpile too, buying up patents left, right and centre, I can't see them doing anything wrong in the near future, even without Steve Jobs. Thing is... all good things come to an end.

When IBM released the AT (I don't even remember what "features" it had, but someone, or at least Wikipedia, probably does), their press release crowed that "it was all the computing power the small business will ever need."

In their mind, they had levered the microprocessor into the perfect replacement for the Selectric typewriter.

Bill Gates was a little more pragmatic, and with Microsoft hiring guys from the best schools who knew the GUI directions of unix, and with Microsoft doing a lot of the programming for the Apples, they saw that the PC could be a lot more than a typewriter. It could be a spreadsheet, too.

Jobs was the industry's visionary. Even in exile, he brought out the Next, which at the time was an operating system and a development platform years ahead of the mainlines.

If it weren't for him, our world would have looked different, and not as good on balance. That's the highest praise we can give a person.

Late 04 I almost bought some AAPL....the IPOD was released and noone really cared at first.....oh, AAPL was $23.....

Next flopped because there was no software for it. Hardware is only as good as the software on it.

With Steve it was always about the 'User Experience' and he delivered. Indeed he was a visionary and was able to bring out the right products at the right time, most of the time! His Next project is a blip on his CV. I don't think he did anything new, we can even debate the GUI till the cows come home, but when he did something, he packaged it in the right way to deliver the right 'User Experience'.

For sure he will be remembered for a long time to come in the way he shaped the information age or at least how he delivered the products to access information. Pioneer... I leave that to people like Charles Babbage, Alan Turing and Tim Berners-Lee. Guess which computer Tim used to create the first Web Server... yes the Next!
