Two Month Gap in MT4 Charts

I was trying to increase the history in my charts because they were only showing a few days worth of data. I went to options in MT4 to increase the max bars in history and in chart and input 99999999 to show the max bars on the chart. However that didn't do anything so I went to history center and tried to download more bars.

Now my charts 4hr and under have a gap of 2 months that show no candles, this is only on the AU which I tried to download the data for. My charts go from 6/10 to 8/15 so I'm missing those 2 months of data. Even when I open a new AU chart it still shows the missing days.

So I was wondering if anyone knows how to fix the problem? Also does anyone know why it doesn't affect charts above the 4hr?

This should fix the 4hrs AUDUSD chart. With your MT4 not running, locate the folder where you have your MT4 installed, and within the 'History' folder, delete the file AUDUSD_fx240.hst. In other words, your path will be something like "C:|Program Files|<broker MT4 install directory>|history|<broker server name>|AUDUSD_fx240.hst"

Each different timeframe chart for a pair is stored in a separate file; the 4 hours chart in this case is AUDUSD_fx240.hst. When you restart your MT4 and it connects to your broker's server, it will force a re-download of the 4 hour chart; any lines and other chart markings should still be on the chart.

Thanks for the suggestion. I found the history files that you said to delete but there isn't any AU ones. I have EU, GU, UCHF and UJ but no other pairs which seems weird. They also have dates next to the files and they are all from like 5 months ago which I don't know if that makes a difference or anything.

I have encountered the same problem a while ago. Normally, you acquire (any) timeframe data from your broker's server as the time goes. If you download data via the History Center (these are Metaquotes data that get timestamped according to your broker's server time), the gap simply happens.. not always, don't know the exact 'why' but it seems MQ data are not filed up to date, at least with some brokers.

I'd suggest to use only your broker's data:

  1. shutdown MT4
  2. delete the whole 'History' folder including anything that's inside
  3. start MT4 (it will renew the folder and subfolders)
  4. acquire the data patiently scrolling backwards all timeframes subsequently (hold the 'Home' key until it stops reading the past, then switch to other TF and repeat).

MT4 servers store less than 70000 candles per timeframe so you won't get much more than 2 months in M1 chart, 10 months in M5.. etc. But it's reliable.

Best to avoid the Metaquotes (downloaded) data completely; use tick data from Dukascopy if you want to do backtests or if you need deeper history with small TFs.

today i noticed that there havent been datas (3:00-8:00).

Thanks for the tip mary jane but it didn't do anything. When I restart MT4 should a new history file appear in my program files? Do I have to do anything when I restart MT4? I tried scrolling backward to get history but it doesn't act like it's loading any and the gap is still there.
I just noticed there are gaps in the weekly chart as well, not the entire 2 months that affected the lower time frames but only the middle part of July is there and none of June or the end of July. So I guess it does affect all charts, not just the lower time frames like I originally thought. That probably doesn't matter with fixing the problem but thought I'd share just in case it will help.

trublu, maybe you have more mt4 instances installed and you're not in the right directory. While running mt4, open the Windows Task Manager. Under the "Processes" tab, you should see "terminal.exe". Right-click it and select "Open File Location". This will surely get you to the right directory. Now, exit mt4, and THEN delete the "history" folder entirely. Start mt4 again; there should be NO data for ANY pair on ANY TF present - every chart you open will display "Waiting for update" first. Now read the data for every pair and every TF holding the Home or PgUp key.. be patient.

If it still doesn't work, you could have wrong server in config, or use an obsolete mt4 client (current build is 402). Make sure you're using a recent build, try a complete reinstall.. if still no-go, contact your broker's helpdesk.

I was in the right directory and deleted the history. I think I'm just going to talk to my brokers help desk and see what they have to say. Thanks for the tips.

Well now I feel like a moron because all I had to do was refresh the chart and the missing data is now back. My broker just said uninstall it but a google search said try to refresh the chart. I forgot where to even refresh the chart because I've never had to do it before but I guess that's all it needed, thanks everyone for your help.
