On the cusp of Autumn at first light we comb the forest and pick up the fallen pine cones off the frosted ground... If you hold the cones up to your ears and listen closely enough, you can hear the forest singing. My father says never to throw the pine cones as it will awake the sleeping spirits of the animals that have gone to rest there.

In the summer time we ride our skate boards down the long winding path which is always sizzling under the sun and a tedious task to trek in bare feet. Destined for the deep ash-felt car park of White Beech, the flat plains of the car park are always sure to slow our screaming boards to a slow enough speed to exit the ride.

We cautiously weave the road at speed, always alert of small pebbles that may become lodged under out wheels, A dangerous situation at best which would always result in another scar on our bare knees or elbows. Just another to add to the collection and give the unfortunate fool something to brag about at football practice.

When we get to the sea side it seems its race of whom can get into the refreshing water first. The freezing water shrinks our privates to a less than admirable size as the waves relentlessly cycle in rhythm.

Jimmy hated the water. He could ride a skateboard like Tony Hawk but his surf board remained in his wardrobe, Grey with cob webs... He had many pairs of board shorts, I don't think I ever saw one of them get wet...

As we rode the waves into the late dusk of summer he would sit on the beech, cross legged sipping his fathers home brewed beer smoking his "cigarettes" that smelt like green envy.

By the time we retired to the beech, the moon rising, stars bursting from the sky like pin pricked air holes designed to keep us breathing, Jimmy would always have a bon fire set... Man could Jimmy make a fire.

Like moths to a light the local girls would flock to the bonfire and would be welcomed more if they brought with them any beverage that contained alcohol. Yeah... Jimmy made a great fire.

Who can capture in words the full moon reflecting off the water, illuminating the scene in a texture that an artist could never capture in man made colors.... Naked bodies care free and spirited, splashing in the water on a warm Saturday night. High on marijuana and youth.

The sheer deviance of underage drinking, the fear of getting caught and having the balls to do it. No commitments, no restrictions, no boss to answer to... just a bon fire, a beech, a bunch of teenagers, and the rest of the summers night to explore it.

To capture that mental state and distibute it to the minds of the world would be to cure the countless drug addicted souls who seek that mental but false illusion of ecstasy and mind stimulation. To stay in that moment for life would surely be a life of sheer satisfaction and full fillment... But, the night somewhere turns to day. Dusk turns to dawn, the moon to the sun, the night to the morrow, the intoxication to sobriety.

Yes... the best things in life are most certainly free but definitely perishable.

As we swam and danced in the moonlight, the moon was bright enough that I could see Jimmy, guarding his fire, always searching the landscape for more wood. I never realized what was happening, how could I? I was simply playing the game life had presented to me and enjoying it at the same time. I guess Jimmy didn't feel the same way. No, Jimmy as it turns out, certainlly didn't see things the same way. As they say, "one mans junk is another mans treasure". I guess for Jimmy that statement is plausible the other way around.
