The other thing to remember when you are placing your stop is market volatility. When volatility is on the increase, your stops will need to be far wider than they are in times of low volatility.
Since volatility moves in cycles, you need to know what cycle you are in.
The other thing to note is market sentiment. What is driving the market? It is hard to get to the root of this if you are not watching it all day but it is something I try to do.
