Thanks you for the fast response.
My EA uses a trend following strategy. So that would mean all three of them?
I think I'll stick with Alpari UK for a while then.

Well, all three of the brokers are reputable and it really doesn't matter 5 pipettes plus or minus, for you .

  1. What does Oanda stand to gain from implementing MT4?

    1. More customers perhaps?

      1. Higher server workload?

        1. More outages.

    2. The ability to see all EAs running?

      1. Ability to copy successful strategies?
      2. Ability to kill successful strategies?

  2. What does the retail trader stand to gain?

    1. Less Java outage nightmares? (we'll see).
    2. Ability to run EAs? (see above).
    3. Negate the need for expensive API? (not if you want to be professional).
    4. Better charting.

The all from the one account solution sounds great, but I cannot help thinking this move is designed to lure more MT4 suckers in than give their clients a better service.

i know exactly how you feel. We really have to wait and see on this one. I don't think oanda will be able to pull it off. Not without significant slippage/requotes/disconnects. If they cant do it with their basic manual trade Java software, I really want to see them do it with an automated platform. I dont want them to fail. In fact, it would be excellent for them to succeed at this mt4 adventure. Logically, based on their prior server performance, I am curious to see how they pull it off.

One of the biggest complaints about Oanda has been the Java charting (and News trading for those that are into that sort of thing). They finally are listening to their customers and implementing MT4 (after years and years of people begging them to do it). That's what I think anyways. It doubt it will change anything...

Maybe there's a genuine demand for MT4?

Maybe the competition has gotten so stiff, especially as a result of the CFTC ruling, that Oanda has to make a move before it loses more clients?

Whatever the real reason, I think it has more to do with the bottom line rather than the desire to give clients a better service (to this day, they still have to fix the bugs in their Java platform!)

Here are a answers to your questions regarding what clients can expect to gain from OANDA MT4. What OANDA expects to gain and the challenges and how we are meeting them.

What does the retail trader stand to gain from OANDA MT4
- Tight Spreads on MT4
- OANDA execution through an MT4 platform
- Server side trailing stops as well as client side
- One account, two platforms
- mobile trading on iPhone, Android and BB (through fxTrade account)

What does OANDA gain from OANDA MT4?
- A more diverse client base. More automated traders with different trading strategies.

OANDA Challenges from OANDA MT4
- More clients = More hardware to handle the load. OANDA has invested on hardware to make sure more traders on the platform results in a better trading experience for all.
- EAs = Higher # of trades. The OANDA fxTrade system was designed from the ground up to be able to execute a far larger number of trades than the leading Forex banks.

In regards to customers trading strategies. OANDA does not have a dealing desk or use Virtual Dealer plugin for MT4 to benefit unfairly from clients.

Because MT4 doesn't allow it for market executions as far as I know. If it's done by any other broker they just do some wrapping around it.
It can be done on FxPro MT4, so probably Oanda could do it too.
