Although I personally do not trade with Gann's methods or approach I do know of traders who successfully use it. A good friend of mine and the best trader that I know uses many Gann techniques and TIME aspects...he uses other tools but Gann is at the core of his trading! Many traders discovered similar things that Gann discovered... Andrews used the Median of cycles to trade...time is also factored into Andrews method.

It's true Gann wasn't a great trader, but that's besides the point. And he didn't reveal all his techniques for free because he ran a trading institute, that's just smart business.

The reason why Gann is so respected is because of his contribution to technical analysis. His research was based on trying to find the holy grail of quantifying human emotion (fear & greed). Although he never achieved this, he was incredibly prolific, and many of the tools he created along the way are still used by traders today. He also laid the groundwork for other mathematicians who followed in his footsteps of applying algorithmic functions to price behavior.

If you put what Gann was doing in the context of history, it was revolutionary for the time and transformed the science of technical analysis.

Personally, I use MM Lines, which is Murrey's improved formulation of Square of Nine. Great tool.

He did not make millions. There is NO proof of that. In the interview his son made it very clear that his father wasn't even an active trader. He made some money publishing his work but he wasn't a rich man at all.

Gann made a contribution. But that is about it! There is also no holy grail to be revealed as ALL his work and findings is available to everybody.....

Don't you get my point. Back then there where no hedge funds there was no way to prove anything 100%.

Brokers place trades for traders. If you're a great trader the brokers who are placing trades for you will talk. They can see and know exactly how much you are making. That's how legend spreads...that's how Richard Dennis's legend grew.

That's the point I'm trying to make if you have a life size picture to this day of you in the New York Stock Exchange then there's a 95% chance you were a kick ass trader. I don't care what Gann's son supposedly said in a book.

I do not know where people get their facts from on this incorrect bit of information that Gann died poor.

In the book on Gann that I read, it stated that he made his fortune in his early career during the Bear market of the Great Depression but lost most of it later and was unable to reproduce his earlier trading success. His fortune went from 50M in the 20's to 5M in the 50's and post war his main source of income was the training institute.

The person who said he died broke is mistaken.

I can't remember the title offhand, but I have a PDF somewhere which I'll try to dig up for you over the holidays. It's a great book and cites research papers from his institute that weren't published in book form when he was alive.

Gann's estate was worth $150,000 when he died according to what I have read. Most of his wealth was supposedly hidden offshore for tax purposes and that is why his estate was so small.

Breakthroughs in Technical Analysis (Keller Ed).

Irwing Guide to Trading Systems (Babcock).

The 1st one is favorable, the 2nd one is not so. Read both and make up your mind for yourself.

i have been studying wd gann like notes on his trading strategy, 45-degree angle, his live calls and square of nine theories for a few years, but still being stucked in the track . Any people can shed more light of his theories here?

Hi yes this is normal about any such kind of topics and threads to become inactive after some time.Nothing suprising here,

Now about william delbert gann,there were some certain principles which he used undoubtedly Which was the cause behind his success,

But the problem is there is much misinformation about him and his trading methods rather than some useful information.
So This task to differentiate the actual principle which he used and what is being told about him and his courses and books is very confusing to some people.And many would give up before researching and understanding it properly.

So to do what he has done would require the same effort and dedication which he has executed during his research.

Since i have myself studied the markets in an unconventional way i can relate to what he was trying to tell others about the markets.But even to understand that requires some knowledge about the 'structure of the market'.

Can you point or recommend some resources to study. I already have my system but I wish to know more and there is so much noise and hear say around...

Hello there are many resources which you can study about W d gann but to start with there are some sites in which i learnt many things about him and you must also read his recommended list as well.Since i am myself an astrologer i Came to Understand some of his principles which were based on planetary cycles and his law of vibration.He also used law of vibration which enabled him to determine time cycles of all the markets because law of vibration is universal and can be applied to every markets but you must have a correct market data to verify it in the first place.

You will find most of the information which i found to be interesting to be here here and here.
