just tried to ask a simple question on their live chat, and was asked to email their support desk for answer, so what is the point to live chat.

Any way, the question was about getting the gomarkets mt4 ip server address, can the go markets rep, post that info here?
Ignored
recently i asked for that, they said no due to people trying to crash their servers, fair enough IMO. I's always the way, a few ruin it for the rest of us!!!!!

Cheers,

probably because the person on the chat isn't a tech. if the person was a tech they might have proceeded further, or might not have.

just because their is a road doesn't mean anyone can use it. just because there is a chat doesn't mean every little whiner will get their answer.

you can learn the server IP adress from MT4 config files.
C: > Program Files > Go Trader MT4 > config > GoMarkets-Real.srv
open this file with notepad. according to mine the server IP is 206.71.180.206

i can ping this adress and answer time 210ms approximately. this seems me slow. i ping google with 70ms

I dont think that is the actual IP. That IP seems to be in the US, and I thought they were putting new servers in Sydney? Perhaps someone can shed some light, or maybe we just wait for gomarkets to confirm?

You are correct on both counts. The new servers are located in Sydney and also the IP address you have quoted is in the US. That IP is actually one of our data centres. There are a number of reasons for not giving out the IP of our main server, and they all relate to security. Firstly by nobody knowing our IP address it means that it is significantly harder for us to be the victims of an attack. You may remember a couple of months ago that unfortunately our servers were the target of a DDOS attack and we had to switch to the backup server. If nobody knows the IP then it is a lot harder for this to happen. If you ask our staff for the IP and they say they can't give it to you, they can't because they don't know it - only two people in the company know the IP and of course our server administrators know it.

The other main reason is that it would be pointless giving the IP out to you all. Our new server infrastructure has been built to be extremely secure. The firewalls are setup to only allow connections from a number of IP addresses round the world. If you were to try and connect to our server from outside of these locations you would not be able to form a connection. Similarly you would never be able to ping the server as both our server blocks it and even our server host would not allow someone to ping the location.

Perhaps I should give some further clarification on the difference between the trading server and the data centres.

The data centres are what all clients connect to and the server is where trades are handled. Your connection is routed from your connection to one of the data centres and that is where you see the prices etc. Only when you click buy or sell does your platform forge a connection to the trading server. We currently have five data centres in Melbourne, Perth, Sydney, Singapore and San Diego. Coming very soon we will be adding at least one in Europe as part of our expansion into the region.

On the subject of the ping speed you were getting, I assume you are in Australia based on that rate? I get much the same when I ping the US data centre. However, if I ping our Melbourne DC I get a ping rate of around 23ms.

I hope that I have not confused anyone and that I have answered your questions!

Hello Chris I`m just checking in 2 see if you asked management about dropping the cut off rate from 50% to say 30% as some brokers have. Question 2 is what is company policy regarding when leverage changes. For example I know leverage drops from 400 /1 to 300/1 at account balance of 25 thou or more, my question is will the client be e mailed or does it happen the second the account balance goes over 25 thou. Also is your company able to keep 400/1 longer for clients if they request it. tanks again in advance for your answer

All this talk about servers begs the question on how we can speed up performance.

I suppose it is an individual thing, depending on where we are in the world.

I am in New Zealand and quite often when I am scalping the delay in pressing the close button changes a small profit into a small loss (or worse a considerable loss when the delay is really bad).

What can we (I in this case) do to imrpove performance, please?

Is this a PC issue? An internet provider issue? A remoteness from data centre/trading server issue? Would a VPS help? Where would it have to be? In Melbourne, Sydney or is San Diego okay?

So many questions, but so important for the majority of us!

Thanks in advance for your reply, Chris.

you can use ms-dos command prompt and then use the netstats or netstat command to determine the server that your mt4 terminal connects to. You would manually switch to each server (lower right-hand side of mt4 terminal) and perform check on each of the server connections manually.

if you have a good firewall program, you could just use the logs there also.

wouldn't be surprised if barry from CNS jumped in to answer this question. but vps is the answer. read about latency at this link.

Knowing the city/country location of the server is good enough to pick vps with low latency. I can understand from a security standpoint though why brokers are hesitant to give out the information.

On the flip side to this, brokers should recommend vps that are close to their trading servers (not just price). I could respect a live trader's request for such IP information (at least privately) to help them pick the best servers to trade from.

Choices, choices.

BTW, the San diego, CA, USA server is *very close* to the CNS san diego vps datacenter. A VPS is essential if you have any form of unattended trading. for $30/mo, you can be up and running.

Crucial offer a good VPS service plus I think they are based in Sydney so with a bit of luck they will be right near the new GO servers.
GO has been bloody reliable recently so a VPS should be a big help.

well done you found your solution (isn't google great). now you can stop annoying the unfortunate people who answer the chat function.

i truly hope you were polite to the person even though wouldn't answer your question. you should realize the world doesn't revolve around what you want and you can't always get what you want.

I have been on and off using a VPS for a while as I have been testing a number of strategies and my internet is really unreliable at the moment (iinet's BOB is crap!!). Tried the Crucial VPS using the discount mentioned above and it is more expensive than US based options, but it gives me less latency to the VPS and back to the trading. Does anyone know where Crucial host their VPS, I cant find it on the wbsite?

Wouldnt this just give the IP of the data centre that you are connected to, not the actual server? Didn't we get told that it is impossible for us to connect to the server directly?

not sure. I do know that if you have SDCA server from CNS trader VPS service, the latency to the GoM live "server" is under 1 ms. or put another way, your order gets filled in less than a second usually, although it may take a 500-1000 milliseconds to report back to the terminal and appear on the chart.

Maybe Barry or someone with more technical knowledge can explain how a live user could measure latency back and forth to the trading server.

From my understanding, the basic order sequence works like this:

client front-end software places order (manually or EA) >
Broker server accepts order >
order filled by broker or liquidity provider and reported back to broker >
Broker server passes fill information to client >
client front-end logs fill and/or shows fill on chart.

There is at each "middleware" between the client initiating the order and the order fill/reject coming back to client, but the one that is within the clients control is from the client front-end (metatrader terminal) to the broker's trading server. As a live (or demo) client, my goal is to be as close to the server as possible to maximize my chances of an accepted order and quick fill.

I am with GoMarketsAus ad they are just awesome. I joined a few months ago and they have improved tremendously. Prior to that they didn't even have 24 hour live chat service and now they do.

From what I know they now have offices in the UK and Canada, so that's another plus! They might even have servers in those countries to speed up processing. You can ask them if you want on their website. Most of the time they respond you immediately if you chat to them online.

I don't know how fast they fill orders relative to other brokers, but for me they are excellent and better than the few American and European brokers I tried. When I place a T/P they close the order always exactly on the price. Mind you, I don't use T/P too much, but the few time I used it was to the 5th decimal correct.

I would give them a 5 out of 5.

this is correct - go markets as a server in our San Diego datacenter. I believe it is listed as DC#5 in the MT4 terminal.

to measure latency, you need to run ping or trace to the IP of the broker's server. You need the brokers IP to do this.

If you like, you can go from our latency chart to get the IP. near the bottom are instructions to actually run the test.

that's what i heard as well.

you wouldn't want to run your connection off a data center as if it went down you wouldn't get rerouted.............
