Not sure where you getting your $400k salary from. Average AUS mining salary is around $140,000 but that's inclusive of all the directors/managers/executives so the average for the lowly blue collars are likely to be much lower. That said there are 2 other factors you have to take into account.

1. Taxation obligations in AU has always been much heavier than that on a comparative scale to the US - somewhere around 30-40% heavier.

2. The mining industry is considered to be Australia's crown jewel, so its understandable that everyone involved wants a share of the figurative pie. Much like the US financial sector, the average income there is far higher than the average across all sectors.
